That's bad, I don't think touch up paint will help. This is just carelessness, I would request of a free repair. Irvine has be good to me, hopefully they get their act together.

I've had bad experiences with NJ and now use Irvine. So far, so good.

I dropped off my 40D, 17-55, & 70-200 f/4IS on Thursday.....

How funny!! I saw you there, or at least someone dropping off the same kit.....are you from RB?

Anyway, Irvine has taken excellent care of me for the last 8 years. FIlm, video and digital. As a matter of fact, they did a stellar job repairing a GL2 I dropped last August.

Am I alone in thinking that scratch marks (and even a dent or two, and some brassing if it's a body) give a piece of equipment character, and make it look like the owner actually uses it?

At the same time, I'm slightly concerned about how they must have been treating the lens, since that paint doesn't really come off that easily.

No not RB, but from Northridge. It was a bit of a drive but better than having Fed-EX or UPS handle it. I was there around 2-2:45pm. Was it me?

I have mostly heard of Irvine doing good work. It was just ironic that this thread came up after I dropped my stuff off.

I went up to Irvine on Monday. The rep I delt with did a great job. I showed him the lens, and the before and after photos. He took it straight to the back room for several minutes. My guess is they were trying to figure out who did it, and then what to do. They are going to replace that part of the lens barrel with a new piece.

That's the kind of answer I was expecting! Good to hear it worked out. Of course, it should never have happened in the first place, I'm sure you have better things to do with your time. But accidents do happen, and at least they are owning up!

Thanks for the update.

Accidents do happen and it is good to see Canon Irvine taking care of its customers instead of trying to pass the buck.

You think you had bad luck?

Now I got a brand new 40D spotted a few stuck hot pixels, sent the camera same day back to the seller who in turn to canon service center.

A few weeks later the seller phones me to say they got the camera back from service and they wan't to send it to me. I said take a few test shots to see if the problem is fixed. They did so and I noticed a lot of dust on the sensor.

After I said that hey how did it turn up in there they agreed that indeed the dust should be cleaned. They sent the camera back to canon service center.

2 Weeks later they phoned me and said my camera is back there are few specks of dust on the sensor and they refuse to do any inspection of the dust problem or send me sensor test images and that they all ready sent the camera to me I'll get it in 3 days or so.

When the camera arrived it was packed nice but when I opened it up it began apparent why they did not sent me test images

Believe me you do not want to see the sensor images.

Does canon service center makes dust cleaning in hazardous to people air conditions? This is unacceptable for a new camera that I had a chance to hold in my hand for few days and it was being brand new in repair for 2 months now.

I refused to repair it the third time and demanded my money back - still waiting for their decision, should get it written this week by mail. Some can say it's just dust but on new product after such "service" that is plain embarrassing it is unacceptable.

I keep the seller anonymous for now incase they will refund my purchase but the service center that made such hilarious fix is in Lithuania, UAB SERGITA canon acredited service center for SLR cameras, by they way they are the only company in my country you get the point right. Total monopoly.

I'm not quite sure how a few specs of dust inside a camera (don't we all have them?) compares to a lens being dinged up by canon.

Few specs of dust isn’t a problem, look at the photo I am not posting some sensor pics, the whole chamber is full of tiny dust specs that are everywhere.

Cleaning the sensor at this point makes no sense cause the dust gets scattered around once the mirror moves.

If this would be my fault for the dust then I would agree with you. But in this case the camera was taken care in authorized service center, how can this be tolerable then? If they can damage someone’s lenses, put instead of cleaning a camera body, what is next The camera is new BTW.

Ben,

I think the damage was made by the shipping group people, not the technician...even in the service center they complain about the shipping group's work.

Once i dropped my two Canon 1D bodies and three lens to Canon NJ, they sent all the 5 items in one box without padding between the cameras and lens, and when the Fedex delivered one box to me, i was so confused, usually Canon only put one item in one box, but two cameras and three L lens in one box without padding, it's like shipping brick etc.....one person or one group's work in a big company will really do damage for the entire company...only thing we can do, just not let this kind of matter go away so easily, call them, visitt them, talk with the top guy......

Good luck for you !

Lide

NJ has always padded heavily to me. Lots of tough brown paper bag like material. Never a nick or scratch. The sensor and mirror always seems to have been cleaned. Knock on wood!

The dust thing posted above. I had the impression cleaning was a part of the process but it looks like it got skipped. It's nice to be clean but a few outdoor lens changes and it will not look much different.
