p.1 #1 · Manfrotto 322rc2 Head, Good?

My dad was looking into getting a Tripod and Head for his spotting scope. I'll probably get it for him for Christmas.

He was looking at both the 322rc2 head and also the Manfrotto 3011N PRO head. Both are a pistol grip type ball head which I've never used before.

So what are your experiences with these? I don't think his scope is too extremely heavy but I was worried at how far the ball was from the mounting base that the 3011N would become unstable/hard to use.

Pistol grip heads are generally pretty bad for use with long lenses on cameras, but you might be OK with one on a spotting scope of reasonable size.

Pistol grips are tops for fast repositioning, but not so hot for precision work.

I would try before I buy. I have one of the 322's that I have used on a lot of weddings. That's with a 24-70mm, or at the longest, a 70-200. If the scope is very long focal length, you may have problems with fine adjustment. Can't hurt to try, though.

Also, depending on fit, you might do well to get the anti-twist RC2 plate. Here it is at B&H
