p.1 #1 · Best RAW conversion for Newbie with 1D?

Just purchased a use 1D for $650 and want to venture into RAW file processing. What software is the easiest/best for a beginner?

Canon's software that came with the camera, for starters because it's FREE. Did you get the disk? If not, try downloading from Canon's website.

Adobe Lightroom would be a good choice. You can get training on lynda.com or through some other sites. Canon's free Digital Photo Professional (DPP), which is free is an option. Good luck.

Do you have a fairly recent version of Photoshop or Elements? Either of those have ACR (Adobe Camera Raw).

Otherwise, iPhoto is good.

If you have a Mac.

LightZone by LightCrafts is a good choice.

You might also check out UFRaw - it is licensed under the GPL. It is simple to use and supports a wide range of camera files.

What about Bibble from Bibble labs? They seem to have a great software with excellent RAW conversion. I am currently testing their product and wanted your opinions before spending $$$.

I'd second the Adobe LightRoom recommendation.

Coming from someone who used Canon's Digital Photo professional for years, I can whole heartedly recommend this program for someone starting off with RAW. Its very fast, runs great on older hardware, has simple, intuitive controls, great image quality, 100% compatibility with all of your Canon RAWs, and is completely free. It also embeds RAW modifications directly into the RAW file, meaning you dont have any "settings" files littering your hard drive.

Lightroom is excellent (its what I currently use), but its big, complicated, and *very* heavy. You need very fast hardware to properly run it. Though far superior to DPP, its geared at more of the advanced RAW user. My advice would be to start off with DPP and if you find yourself wanting more, look into moving up to Lightroom.

Adobe Camera Raw. Master it and stay on the cutting edge.
