The Elements 5 manual identifies 16 different file types from among which you can choose one when you "Save As". When I've edited a TIF file I converted from DPP and click on "Save As", the list of file types I'm offered contains maybe 6 or 7 types; one is JPEG 2000, but no plain JPEG; the Windows Picture and Fax Viewer can't read the JPEG 2000 output file. Furthermore, I can't see any way to influence the size of the saved file, which I was able to do in version 3.
I'm very confused by this, and I wonder if there's some simple underlying thing I'm missing here; a global parameter or something? Can anyone shed any light on this for me, please?
Sounds like you are working with a 16 bit file. Some file formats, like Jpeg, are 8 bit only. You need to convert the file from 16 bit to 8 bit and then do the Save As. In Photoshop it is Image>Mode. In elements I am not sure but a check in the help file for 16 bit and/or 8 bit should turn up the proper command/procedure.
