I may have gone over the top with this, but I wanted to try my hand at the gritty "tough and textured" look.

I like the overall processing, that seems to be one of the "in" looks now. Did you use something like Machine Wash?

If I had one critique though, I would have burned his neck some in front of his left ear.

If you're willing to post your processing details I'd be interested in reading, there's a couple ways to achieve this affect and it's interesting to see how others do it.

Thank you Doug and Ryan. I did not use Machine Wash (not sure what that is) but it sounds useful if it does the same effect easier.

I basically used the High Pass filter method on a couple layers.
Gaussian Blur
Then a USM at 100,30,0
I also used the smart Filter technique to apply the texture to only the background.
Also color Dodge and Burn in various places.
Last, I added the framing.

Let me know if you wanted more details and I will document it out better. Just don't have time right now.

Oh also did some Liquify to shape the face a little.
