p.1 #1 · 5D AND DUST

I was wondering how bad is the dust problem on the 5d. Would just leaving a 24105 on it for the majority of the time minimize it
thanks

I've had my 5D since they first came out and dust really hasn't been a problem. I've swabbed it a couple of times and I've blown it with a rocket bulb about 5 times. Most of those times have been recautionary more than to get something off that's in the shot.

I've only had one time when there was a real noticeable spec in there.

I wouldn't worry about dust to the point of keeping one lens on it, as that would be so limiting and result in less interesting images.

Mine is 2 years old 60,000 clicks...I have never swabbed the sensor. I have occassionly flicked a speck out of it with a small sensor brush...never brushed the whole sensor though. Did a whole month in Europe...changing lenses constantly...not a spot....that whole thing was overstated and maybe limited to the initial copies which may have come out of the factory with dust allready in there.

IMO the camera has nothing to do with dust, its the end user. I have had my 5D for about a year and a quarter and never once needed to clean it, I have a friend who cleans his constantly. I think it depends on the shooting environment, how you change your lenses (do you hold the camera face down when you do it?) etc. Any SLR Ive shot ive never had a dust problem (and thats MANY slrs.) While other ppl I know need to clean quite often, and I know I use my cameras alot more.

My 5D is 18 months old I have never needed to clean the sensor, and I mainly use it for sweeping landscapes at F8-22.

With that said, some early units shipped with a large amount of factory installed dust, working out of nooks and crannies and onto the focusing screen and CMOS. I think the 5D dust reputation is largely due to those poor souls that bought early.

My 5D shipped with a terrible white cloth bag that covered it with hundreds of tiny strands of lint. I noticed and cleaned most of it off, but a few got in the mirror chamber and needed to be removed. Wasted a good 15 minutes of my time cleaning the mirror chamber but no problems since.

Over a year old and I change lenses all the time, never needed to clean it once.

Lots of previous posts on this subject: Use the forum search page (link at top of this page) and then use the Google search of forum posts with "+5D +dust" (without the quotes) as your search terms.

I have a 5D. I sometimes see dust in 5D photographs. Since you can shoot full frame at smaller apertures without defraction-caused sharpness, this increases the visibility of dust spots.

When I notice them it is a simple and very quick matter to remove them in photoshop. If the dust gets too bad I clean the sensor. I have written more about how I deal with this on my 5D at my web site.

Bottom line: Dust is a fact of life with DSLRs, but it isn't a crisis. I don't find that the dust issue is that big of a deal with my 5D and I both shoot a lot and change lenses a lot.

I've only cleaned my 5D twice in the two years I've owned it, nothing more than a quick "puff 'n brush" each time. Come to think of it I clean the 20D at about the same rate.

I't probably helps that I take great care when changing lenses.

As previously stated, you can stop down further with a full frame sensor and that's when the dust is most visible. On the other hand when using my 20D, I tend to avoid small apertures except when shooting macro. Guess what? Dust there too.

Bottom line (compared to a crop sensor), the 5D does collect a little more dust and the manner in which you shoot may show it up more. However for me it's not a show-stopper and the advantages of the 5D far outweight this small inconvenience.

I had a 5D for two years (don't have it anymore unfortunately). It's dust wasn't anymore than other DSLRs I've had. But it did seem to get dust in the viewfinder more than the smaller crop and 1D cameras I've had. May have just been coincidence, but it does seem like dust in the viewfinder is reported more commonly than other cameras.

In any case, it's a great camera. I'd be tempted to say that it's the first "classic" DSLR camera by Canon. There are now better cameras, but there's just something special about the 5D and it's images.
