p.1 #1 · Holiday Cards for Clients?

A client wants me to provide holiday (Xmas) cards of one of the photos I took of her child.

Should I handle this or give her the file and recommend a source?

Advice, suggestions, tips, markup on costs? URL for sources?

Thanks!!

Bev

If you provide the service for the client this year it could become an annual thing.
Mpix has a lot of card choices. http://www.mpix.com/productsinfo.aspx?prod=7

Bev,

Any of the major labs will be able to do cards in bulk (generally packs of 24-25). Most have many different paper styles, sizes, colors, etc. You really need to shop around for it. I use WHCC for 95% of my printing, and will probably try them for cards this year as a thank-you card to good customers.

As for giving her the file, personally, I'd handle this. You don't want her butchering your shot and then sending it out to people.

As for markup, that's up to you.

John

Thanks everyone! A friend recommended WHCC, too. They seems to have decent prices which include envelopes. I like the idea of not having templates because there's so many to choose from and nickwsu has a good point--how would a client pick from that? I'm also a graphic designer so I could create my own templates if I wanted. I'm just trying to avoid having too many choices because that makes it harder for me.

I agree with you John, I don't want anyone butchering my files! I'd originally offered to provide her with the file in the exact size & crop of her card choice; that's when she suggested I do it all.

Do it yourself. I do it and it's quick and easy and makes people happy. You want people to remember "happy things" when they think of you, right?

I also use WHCC. The linen card stock is beautiful. I usually charge about $60 for design and $2 per card. Not really a great money maker. I look at it as better than free marketing.

I do custom cards for clients. It's not the most profitable product I offer, but it is a great service to provide to clients and they do appreciate it. I design them very simply in photoshop, add the client's favorite shot from a session or sessions they've done with me throughout the year and have them printed at WHCC.

Here's one I designed and my client approved this week.

My lab of choice is Filmet (of Pittsburgh, PA). They were kind enough to send me brochures and samples of the cards (and a separate price list).
