Finally someone with experience. Lots of youngsters here. I'm 57 and grew up with a darkroom in the basement. I used my Dad's WWII era Leica and a Speed Graphic from the time I could hold them. By second grade I was doing all the darkroom work.
My parents bought me a 110 film camera (remember those horrible things?) when I was 8 years old...I took photos of my friends, my cat, and family vacations throughout my childhood years. That was 31 years ago...
I didn't get "serious" until much later, and when I decided to finally take a class in photography my dad gave me his ancient Argus Cosina camera & lenses (he bought the camera when he was in the Korean War). This was around 12 years ago, so I would say my "serious" shooting began then...with a darkroom in my apartment, etc.
