p.2 #1 · L Brackets

Back to the original question. Except for the specific example debated over the last two pages the differences in L-brackets overall are quite minor. I happen to like the RRS way a bit better now. But the Kirk would function just as well. One area RRS holds an edge is if you start adding other accessories, they have a pretty extensive selection (I call them Legos for photographers), Kirk not so much as yet. Really you an't go wrong with either.

Now for that Mk III bracket, the Kirk ones look like a cleaner more elegant solution, while the RRS is a more efficient one in the end, just looks clunky. Like sjms said, pick the compromise you like better.

yes they will. the body design of the 1D3 and 1Ds3 are identical to the millimeter.

just remember with the kirk its either one or the other or 2 for twice the price. generally the non wifi model because most will not end up using the wifi unit at $800 but then again ......

compromise is a .......

I'm flying to Bangkok in the end of December. If I can buy the 1Dsmk3 then or in January, I will do that. If not then I will buy the 1Dmk3 & 5D instead. I'm travelling in S.E.Asia the first 3 months next year so I really need it then
And I like to have the L-bracket with me when I arrive because I can't get one in Thailand

Having said that RRS has been great with me over emails and I have to call Kirk. They haven't answered one of my emails in years.

Actually I sent Kirk an e-mail about the L-Bracket this weekend. First thing on Monday morning I got the reply from Kirk

I only asked if their L-brackets for the 1Dmk3 also would be the one for the 1Dsmk3 camera.

The answer was this:
"Were not sure untill we get our MarkIIIS in to check"

Ahh, OK then, was hoping they would say "you don't need to buy two L-Brackets for the Mk3, one to use a cable release only and one to use the radio controller..." or something to that effect.

lars it fits. it uses the same frame as the 1D3 just like the previous 1D2/1D2n/1Ds2.

i have had the RRS one from my 1D3 on the 1Ds3 body

Yes I also belive that it will fit. But they didn't say it was for both cameras on their website. RRS did say that.
Another FM:er from the U.S will buy one from RRS for me. And give it to me in Bangkok.
An L-bracket cost about $ 320-325 after shipping, VAT and duty when ordering from Sweden

I guess each to his own, but I like the look and feel of the Kirk brackets better. For the 1D3 though, if you're going to use it in the studio, I might be tempted to get the RRS bracket, even though it looks pretty kludgey and borderline unstable to me.

I think that's the key though, it's for studio use only when you have the wireless attached....

Actually I don't believe they are. The lower part of the body is the same, but the upper part where the VF is is different since the 1Ds3 has a larger prism. Still, the bracket fits the lower part so for all practical purposes I guess you could say they're the same.

to each their own and we all have our preferences. the RRS on my 1D3 has done the job as "kludgey and boarderline instable" as it looks to the uninformed eye. fortunately for me as usual RRS has produced a rock stable interchangeable streamlined (thats the opinion of a uninformed aircraft ground engineer of course) reasonably thoughtout product that does both jobs and allows for adjustment to taste too. of course if you only need one for studio then the kirk might be your choice but you wouldn't want to take it out w/o the wifi unit and have all the extra does nothing space on the left side. some cannot see the forest for the trees. me, i'll take the versatility and let me assure you that after using the RRS bracket of the same basic design on the 1D2 and 1Ds2 along with this uninformed minorly maligned one on the1D3 and as of recent the 1Ds3 test bed last momth it has proven to be more then stable and works very well to my taste in gear.

yeah you could say that couldn't you. i had the RRS plate on the 1Ds3 for 3 days about 3 weeks ago after the show in NYC. as usual it worked like a charm with and without the wifi unit attached.

after using the 1D2 and 1Ds2 together i needed to mark both cameras on top so as to not grab the wrong one. on the 1Ds3 it is a little more pronounced on the top and fwd left edge now but i'll still need to mark them when i get the final product. even with it in use you don't even notice it at all.

greater latitude over all as expected. the 1Ds2 did a nice job. it is an evolutionary step. in the series. the jump in size makes it much easier to crop as needed and produce a excellent 20x30 w/o rework.
