p.1 #1 · Santa Cruz shots

I recently went to Santa Cruz and tried my hand at shotting some birds...I usually shoot buildings and the city life type of stuff.
I would really like to know what needs to be done to get some shots as crisp and sharp as some of yours.

Hard to make a comment or suggestion when you don't offer up any information. For example, what lens did you use, what ISO, f-stop, shutter speed, did you post proc, crop etc...? I don't find any of the basic EXIF info in your files so it must have been stripped out during conversion from raw.

p.1 #3 · Santa Cruz shots

oh sorry......i forgot that the conversion took that away......
Both shots...f5.6
1/1600
ISO 400
focal length 185mm

Just got the camera and learning to shoot panning shots. So to practice the actual capturing of an image I used auto mode on my D40.
There was nothing done to either photo these are just converted and posted.....
I'm really trying to get a hang of this but finding any help is getting a bit frustrating.
