p.1 #1 · Sigma 15 mm fisheye DG vs. non-DG

Hello
The Sigma 15 mm diagonal fisheye lens is available as 15 mm EX DG version and as 15 mm EX non-DG lens, too. I know that they state the DG lenses are optimized for less flare with DSLRs. But does it really matter?
Do both fit to any sensor-size Canon DSLR, or are there limitations I overlooked?
Currently both types are available, but the non-DG is offered at substantially lower price.
Who uses either of these lenses (preferably on a 1D body) and can tell us the outcome?
Thanks for your input.

The DG version is quite a contrast monster. And it can stand flare quite a bit.

The shots were made with a 15 fish from a friend, and my initial response was "Did I put a pola on there??". I think the contrast is one of the better points of the lens, so I'd avoid the non-DG, even though I have never looked at a direct comparison between the two.

I've never read of any significant difference between any Sigma DG or non-DG lens. I'm not saying the coating is useless, but I personally haven't heard of anyone finding any discrepancies between the two.

Thank you all for your input here.

Hello Tentacle
The contrast you show is really impressing.

Nonetheless, is anyone out there who has the non-DG on a DSLR with great results?

I had the non-dg version for a few months, it was great. I only sold it to get a 17-40. I was happy with it, I'd say comparable to an L lens in saturation and contrast. I did not use it under demanding conditions where flare was an issue, so ymmv. I was impressed with the little guy, if I didn't need a zoom more, I'd still have it.

Good to hear that, Scott.
Someone else happy with the EX?

I have the non-dg older version bought used. Use it on a 1-DMkII and 30D.
It is a wonderful performing lens. A real game day player. Because the Sigma has higher native close-focus magnification than the Canon 15mm Fisheye, the Sigma is a better photo-essay, PJ lens for pulling viewer's into the frame. I use it, but not over use it, for stuff like:

If the EX is available to you cheap enough used, and you need a fisheye, then get. The DG is likely a little less internal flare prone, but how much? Who knows? all these lenses are so radical they have chromatic aberrations and flaring. Comes with what they are.
If you need even more native magnification on a crop camera, then the Tokina/Pentax fisyeye zoom is really good.

Yes, the non DG version is just fine. Great in fact. I had one, sold it, now am back with a DG version. Never had them side by side though.
