New software that wouldn't make it for the 40D but would be released later together with the 1DsMkIII:
Among the most valuable features of the EOS-1Ds Mark III Digital SLR is its compatibility with Canon's new Picture Style Editor 1.0 software. With PSE, photographers can personalize the look of their photographs by inputting their own preferred image processing parameters, including custom tone curves. The EOS-1Ds Mark III Digital SLR also ships with the latest versions of Canon's powerful software applications, including Digital Photo Professional 3.2 and EOS Utility 2.2, which support the camera's Remote Live View and Dust Delete Data functions, as well as incorporating a broad range of additional improvements designed to improve image quality and speed up workflow. Particularly noteworthy in DPP 3.2 is a new Lens Aberration Correction Function that corrects various image defects such as chromatic aberration, color blur, vignetting, and distortion. Initially, the Lens Aberration Correction Function will support images captured by the EOS-1Ds Mark III and 11 other EOS Digital SLRs using any of 29 individual EF and EF-S lenses. Also included are ZoomBrowser EX 6.0 and ImageBrowser 6.0 for easy browsing, viewing, printing, and archiving with compatible computer operating systems, ...Show more →
In contrast, the 40D would only get PSE 1.0 as the really new bit of software, the rest is the same as the ones currently available for download & released together with the 1DMkIII.

Any more price info? I expect it will be the same as the mkII. I also expect the amazon listing will disappear soon.....
Anyone mention the new 14mm lens?

Owning a 1DSM2 I can say with confidence that if they don't release a new line of much higher resolution lenses the additional resolution is meaningless as none of the current line of lenses can fully resolve 16.7MP.
I noticed that in the 1DsMk3 specs page that it can only do ISO3200 I hope that's just a wrong entry, seeing as the smaller APS-H sensor on the 1DMk3 can get to ISO6400.
How so? 1Ds3 has a larger sensor than the 1D3, if anything, it should be easier to get ISO6400, assuming everything else is equal.
It's not teh size of the sensor as a whole, it's (more or less) the pixel size. The 1Ds has 2.1x as many pixels, but the whole area of the sensor is only 1.69x (1.3 times 1.3) as large, which means that each individual pixel is smaller.
The numbers won't work out precisely correct because of the effects of non-active pixel areas mitigated by microlenses, but more or less, you'd expect the 1Ds3 to have more noise on a given pixel than the 1D3.
Yes - I have had to purchase Zeiss and Leica glass to bring out the potential of the camera. I don't own either 85 or 135 but the 70-200/2.8L is a no go in terms of resolution. The best two Canon lenses that resolve well but not fully are the 50/2.5 macro and 100/2.8 macro. Nothing in the wide range - I have purchased Zeiss and Leica 28 primes.
I can't speak for the new 50, 85L or 200/1.8L as I don't have them.
Oh, okay, I assumed everything else was equal, and that the 1Ds3 had the same 7.2um pixel pitch as the 1D3, along with the other sensor improvements like narrower microlens gaps & bigger active area. It turns out it has the same pixel pitch as on the 350D/20D/30D (6.4um).
Among the other things already stated, several things are suspect. The listing above states that the rank in the photo section was #59. But Amazon always lists the sales at two levels: first for "Cameras and Photo" and secondly for "Camera & Photo>Digital Cameras>Digital SLRs". The listing above only has the overall sales rank.
Furthermore, the Canon EOS 1D MK III has an overall sales rank of #263 (and a Digital SLR sales rank of #22). There's only one left in stock and it's been sitting there for a while, so it doesn't sell quickly. I find it hard to believe that an $8000 body that hasn't been released yet could achieve an overall sales rank of #59.
So I think someone at Cameta or whoever is listing the camera at Amazon was playing with our heads.
