Just a word to those buying from Amazon and who have not bought breakables from that firm before:
Amazon packs everything in the same Amazon boxes. The UPS guy sees Amazon on the box and says to himself, "Oh, books. Not breakable." He treats it accordingly. At my house I have a small front courtyard with an unlocked iron gate. The regular UPS guy always comes to the door, while the subs take the short cut: drop it over the gate. That five foot drop has caused me to send back a computer hard drive and a lens. On both occasions, I was at home when the UPS guy came--and I heard the box bang on the cement walk. He never even tried to come through the gate.
The lens would not autofocus--I guess it could have been defective. The hard drive, I didn't even try. Took it direct to UPS to file a claim.
I've corresponded with Amazon about this, suggesting that they add appropriate labels to boxes with breakables, but they're too big to care. So if your 40D does not perform as you hope, it may be because UPS treated it like books along the way.
FWIW.
