whoops OK I found it again. Seems the original link in this thread is not working anymore. I also can't search on their site for 40D.

The links to the 40D and 1Ds MK III are working for me. They are no longer available for pre-order.

Oh you are right, I get it to work right now. Ten minutes ago the link in the second post of the thread would give me a 404. Thanks.

Got this one from DPR, I'll take it down if owner requests so.

Canon has some new, breakthrough features in the works, so they aren't worried about reserving these features for their top models anymore. Once the new features come out, their top models will once again be significantly separated from the X0D's.

But the 1DsmkIII and 1DmkIII are new models that were (or will be) released in 2007. If Canon stays true to their history, neither professional model will see a real upgrade again until the year 2010. I doubt that Canon is holding back on any new technology for future models.

I think it's incredible that Canon decided to implement so many professional features into a prosumer model. The 10 MP sensor, 3" LCD, and dust reduction were a given. Bigger viewfinder, sRAW, and wireless were a mild surprise.

But weather sealing? 14-bit RAW? 6.5 fps? Dual high precision center AF point? All other AF points became cross type? Interchangeable focus screens? If someone told me last week that the EOS 40D would have all these things, I would've dismissed it as a fanboy's wishful thinking.

If someone would like to see the specs, you can find them here as well:

http://gizmodo.com/gadgets/still-unconfirmed%2C-but-close/canon-eos-40d-dslr-amazon-lets-it-all-out-291027.php

The 40D seems amazing. It would look great next to my 5D! If only I had some spare cash

I can think of some features they weren't able to include in the 40D: AF micro-adjustment, built-in wireless, built-in AF assist light (w/o using the pop-up flash), dedicated/programmable MLU button, native ISO3200 or extended IS06400... =P

Here's a currently working Amazon direct link:

The III has some key advantages over the 40D:
+ Lower noise, very usable to ISO 2500+
+ Auto focus at f/8
+ Micro-focus adjustment.
+ Accurate focus, yes thats right
+ Raw buffer size

I'm surprised Canon didn't include micro-focus adjustment for the 40D,
would have saved them countless service calls,
and put an stop to the endless front focus / back focus complaints on web sites.

$1299 for a 40D is a great price but no way I can imagine,
it will compete on accurate focus and noise level at high ISO's to the lead $4499 III.
The 1.6x's never have before I can't see it starting now...

I think the micro-adjustment is something they could, but were not willing to add. It's a serious high-end option, for those who really know what they are doing, and have the equipment to make good use of it. It makes sense to leave this as a 1D series-only option.

I ordered the 40D from Amazon last night when the page was working. Even though the page has been pulled apparently my order still got in. Shipping estimate is 10/1-10/5 but Amazon is usually a lot quicker than its estimates. I'm excited.

I ordered it with the kit lens for $1500, and now it's still saying it's a 28-135mm in my order status page (but the link to the purchasing page is gone). I'm pretty sure the lens will be the new 18-55IS though.

You must have had that link cached or something... because it is NOT there now... Do a shift reload... and you'll likely find it will not work any more...

Here are some links to the text data that was included in the amazon URLs... (there is no formating in this, so you'll have to scroll over to the side or something...

I ordered that Kit as well... If it comes with the 18-55mm IS lens... then I will very likely return it. I want the 28-135mm IS lens as it states in the main heading for the order... I have a Tamron 17-50mm f2.8 lens (that I purchased from Amazon) and do not want a 18-55mm f3.5-5.6 IS lens... even if it does have 4 stops of IS... Besides, it seems I could buy that lens for $200 by itself if I really wanted to...

""How about the fact that opening the cf door doesn't shut the camera down anymore? Canon actually listens to customers?""

Took seven years. Not sure if that is listening. Seems more like randomly hitting on something by accident.

I didn't plan on keeping either lens (18-55 or 28-135) but figured the kit package must be a better deal. Now I kind of wish I had just gotten the body as the 18-55 IS lens appears to cost $200 by itself. I'm also hoping it comes with the 28-135mm.

Have we decided if it's weather-sealed or not based on the Amazon description?
