that all depends on how badly you need a D200 right now. If you do not have a camera now, just go get one and enjoy it! You can wait for eternity for the next big realease... but if you buy a D200 now, you can use and enjoy it right away.
in my case: i have plenty of nikon gear, so i don't buy anything unless it is new and revolutionary.
eh.. skip that last word. as long as it is new i will buy it (yeah yeah i'm a fool)
Well I do have a Minolta DiMAGE z3 but that's no fun any more. Might just as well buy the D200 now and see the price plummet in a couple of month when the D200x arrives. I'll get my pay cheque on the 25th and then I'm going shopping.

Maybe. As long as it has either built-in IR assist or an HID spot beam trained on the cat. How 'bout a red laser dot from the laser sighted .357? (just don't forget to pull the trigger).

I'm with you there Gerald. No offense to David (Eaglewolf), but but why waste electrons on cats when you can waste led on them instead?!

Obviously, I wasn't serious either. Just because I don't especially like cats doesn't mean that I think it's o.k. to kill them...

HID would add too much weight/bulk and i'd rather not have anything on my camera consuming 10-15W. if the IR assist was like that IR grid from the old sony 707 that would be nice.

Ah, guys - that's funny. In fact it is the same thing my wife said about some of the kids she sees in the grocery stores! She just prefers the 30-06 or the .223 - more punch, you know.
I recently read where Sony has just committed a HUGE amount of money (some 60 billion yen) into CMOS development, which actually positions their investment in this area noticeably higher than Canon's. The marriage Nikon has had with Sony for years means that this is likely very good news.
I think the D200 is one of Nikon's trump cards on competition right now personally. There really isn't a direct competitor in the price range. The 5D is a lot more expensive and frankly isn't a direct competitor anyway. Anyone considering the type of camera that the D200 is - even if soon to be updated - won't regret the purchase imho... it's an outstanding value for the amount of features and handling it offers.
Hmm...I don't know what to say about the specs. D-Lighting is reasonable since they can probably reuse the same chip as the D40(x), D80 etc. and 12MP sounds reasonable because it helps separate the D200 from the D80/D40x. Beyond that...I really dunno.

David, I have the same thought about a lot of kids I see, seeing as I'm pretty strict with my own ... of course if the kids are young, I shoot the parents.
Who said anything about joking with regards to shooting cats!! Of course whatever the gun, the ammo must be hollow-point!!!

Yes, with a mix of Glaser's thrown it too.
Meanwhile, back on the serious side...All this talk about a new D200 is interesting though. I know we tend to go overboard with the rumors, and this might be no different, but a few new useful features, less noise, etc. could make a great camera even better. I'd love to see the CAM 2000 AF system in there too, but not if the price jumped to $2500 - $3000 or more.
Otherwise I'm happy where I'm at with my cameras. (Okay, so I'd jump at the chance to add a D2X/s or F6 to my bag, but let's be reasonable about this.) Having two nearly identical cameras does have a certain appeal. Adding glass is always the best investment as we often say here. More than likely that will be where my camera resources will be concentrated for a while.
Guess I'll just buy the D200 and hope Nikon does a D70 to D70s upgrade again so I can get most of the new fancy stuff from the D200x by just upgrading the firmware.
