Does your MkIII have AF issues?
Yes, it absolutely has a focusing problem
No, it seems to work fine (similar to previous 1-Series bodies)
I'm not sure yet

Nothing scientific about a easy formula here : http://www.calculateme.com/Speed/MilesperHour/ToFeetperSecond.htm

Put in 40MPH or even 30MPH and the car would have traveled 58 feet per second or 44 feet per second. So the car traveled about 145 feet or 110 feet in 2.5 seconds whatever MPH you use.

Thanks for the test, Lidesun.

Other than 20 and 21, the shots are all sharp. Pretty similar to what I've gotten with the 5D (except that I'd have about 8 frames instead of 25). It will be interesting to see how well it tracks a smaller target (the "bird-in-flight" shot is what comes to mind).

Hi, Tom..

Yes, my 5D is pretty good for AI SERVO shooting too, but the feel is just so different compared shooting with the 5D and 1D Mark III, the focus is so quick even compared with other 1D bodies.....

I don't shoot birds and sports.. and the 200mm is the longest lens i use, so even the 1D Mark III really has some problems with longer lens and AI SERVO which i might never face at.....So i am satisfied with its perfoemance after returned the first problemed 1D Mark III with err99

Got my MK III this morning, did some brief informal AF tests.

One shot appears to be on the spot 100% o the time.

Did some AI Servo testing of a person jogging several times in late evening light, 75deg or so, tracked with nearly every shot sharp. Center point only.

No problems as of yet.

Serial number 524xxx

Firmware 1.0.8

Curiousity question . With a lot of people having AF problems, or "alledged" problems, has anyone really heard anything from the SI photographers & the Pros? We know a lot of them are out there using the MK III, but I really haven't heard too much from them. Hoping that they may post some of their settings soon, like they did for the other Canon cameras

p.5 #13 · RE-POLL: MkIII have AF issues?

I've posted some of this before...Take it with a grain of salt because it is second hand information. However, it is coming from a colleague who I know well.

My colleague shoots track and field. He is often shooting right besides the top SI T&F shooters. My colleague has a 1D3. Several of the SI guys also have the camera. I've asked him about the AF problems. He insists that he hasn't had the AF problems. He also states that the SI guys are not having any problems with AF. They all love the camera and would not trade it in. The SI guys have being using the prototypes as well as production models. NO PROBLEMS!!!. I asked this question several weeks ago when they were shooting T&F in Portland. I asked my colleague again last week after he shot the US Championships in Indianapolis. Again, the comments from him...NO PROBLEMS. He and the SI guys have shot thousands and thousands of T&F shots. Also, there was a contingency of Chinese shooters with the 1D3. NO PROBLEMS...They insist that it is operator error.

I would think that they would know if there are problems similar to those reported by Galbraith. Moreover, if there are problems, I would think SI would stop using the camera and return to the 1D2.

Now who do you believe?

Jim

PS: SI will be posting their settings recommendations soon for the 1D3.

If the AF of the MkIII is more sensitive, it would follow that it would be more apt to focus on something other than the subject, if the focus point strays off the subject.

True...then is it the camera's fault or the operator's fault when the focus point strays off subject?

If the camera is designed to be very sensitive and very fast in AF, then dumbing down the system seems to be the answer for us mere mortals who can't keep the focus straight.

I know, I know, it can't be this simple...

Still wondering if there is anyone who claims there are no AF issues with their Mk IIIs under Rob G's problem conditions (Bright Sunlight and warm/hot temperatures)?

If I was pressed to make a call on the "perceived " AF fault between camera or user error. I am going with user error. 3 cameras with the same fault & the conclusion is that the camera is the culprit. I don't think so. Sounds like user re education required.
I own a MK3 by the way (pre emtive defence)
Anyhow, were all on the same side & no doubt all have the same desire to get the best out of the current technology. And of course it seems the subject of IQ has been practically ignored in all this. I have said from the start that I believe the MK3 produces better looking images than the 1DSMK2 (which I also own)
FWIW my sources tell me that a firmware upgrade is imminent.......days away.

Cheers,

Paul

I should add by the way. I always enjoy checking out RG's site. No questioning his credentials of course. He has been in the game for a long time & definitely knows his stuff.
I just don't agree on this ocacasion is all. I may be wrong........time will tell.

I shot an Atlanta Braves AA Team (Mississippi) in Solid White uniforms at 2:00pm here a couple of weeks ago. Temp's in the mid 90's...Hot and Humid. MKIII performed flawlessly with 400 f2.8. I am solidly sold on the MKIII.
