One from today after doing some tests on the effects of removing the internal 39mm UV/Haze (L37c) filter inside the 300mm f/4 AF ED IF. Tests were done at infinity and basing from the results, I would insist using the darn internal filter.
There is image degradation relating to depth of field - without the filter, the lens doesn't behave as expected at any aperture or DOF. Without the filter, even tho the camera AF has focused on infinity, it's stilll out of focus, whatever aperture I used. My conclusion is, without the filter, the lens can't focus on infinity, is less sharper and has less DOF (even at higher DOF). That's why Nikon says to always use this darn tiny filter. I would like to post the results but it will be a long write up, lol.
The image below was shot after the tests. As usual, no photoshopping, no cropping, just used NX2.3.1. Cheers.
