Just for fun (and because before I saw the blank 40D page on the Canon HK site, a couple of the very confident “no 40D until September” posts had me wanting to verify the source I had which was this and the new 1 series would be soon (Feb / March)). So at lunchtime today I popped into to 3 local (Australian) camera city stores to ask the same question:
“I have a 5D and was thinking of getting a 30D as a second body, could I see one and what was the price?” If needed, I'd follow this up with a query about should I wait for a 30D replacment.
The first store (small) said that they had stopped stocking the 30D since December as they weren’t selling well – people were picking up the 400D or Nikon D80 and they didn’t wan to be stuck with old stock when Canon came out with a new model in the New Year. I asked when that was, they said that the Canon rep had been cagey but they understood it would be February or March, though it may not get to Australia straight away. They then offered to get me in a 30D and a “great price” by the end of the week.
The second store (medium size) said that they didn’t stock 30D's anymore because people were going for the 400D or the Nikons or Pentax, but that their professional store still had them. They then asked if I was in a hurry to buy. I said “why” and they said that they had heard that there was a significant price reduction coming for the 30D in Australia, so I may want to wait for that. I asked about a replacement for the 30D and they said they hadn't heard anything official , but that it wouldn't surprise them to see a replacement, given that they found the 30D hard to sell against the competion in the last couple of months.
The last store (large) had the 30D in stock and on special and they pushed it hard (offering to drop to price match the Nikon D80 + $100 as a opening possition). I asked why so cheap and the Nikon deal etc and they said that they had done a bulk order deal with Canon and where selling these off cheap to maintain volume. I then asked about a new model. They said that they had nothing definite and would ask the Canon rep next time he was in, but that the 20D and then the 350D were both discounted before new models were introduced. They then pointed out that both models (350D and 20D) were retained as current in the Canon line-up when the new models came out and the new models were then back at around the old models price before the reduction. They then pushed the great price, why wait for a potential new model that would cost more, did I really need more megapixels, the 8mp 30D was better than the 10mp 400D etc. I said that I would wait until I found out about any new model and then come back if the 30D still seemed attractive.
Anyway – just one town and three stores…. But interesting…
geoff, please go back to the shops and ask them the same question about the 1d(s) ...
