p.1 #1 · Inhospitable (aerial series)

A few from yesterday, crossing the Continental Divide. Winds were, let's say, brisk... Our groundspeed shortly after the last image was 205 knots (compared to a 'typical' lee-side fast speed of 170, most of the time). Wouldn't want to be standing on any of these ridgelines...

Enjoy!

Jeff

I bet the pucker factor on that flight was pegging the tense-o-meter.

The snow blowing in #2 is ultra-dramatic. Nice job!

Terrific mountain tops. I'm drawn however to the sharpness of the lens particularly in the first shot. They must have been taken out an open door/window?? What lens were you using and camera if you don't mind.

Thanks everyone, it was a pretty spectacular day, despite the 'pucker factor'.

Albert, I hate to say it, but due to conditions, I did not open the window, and it could have been cleaner (unfortunately). I was, however, able to minimize the reflections, luckily. These were taken with a Canon PowerShot S70, my aerial camera of choice while flying. I tried the 30D one day, but it simply had too much mass to be stable in the helicopter. The simplicity of the S70 and the (relative) quality of the (P&S) file is decent enough to get up to 12x18 prints.

Thanks for checking these out, and glad you all enjoyed!

Jeff

Really love the #2 image. Beautiful lines and shapes.

Did you get drop off at the peaks? I have done that once with helicopter just outside Banff, and wore snowshoes when we got off the helicopter at one of the peaks. But the wind was so cold and strong, I could only stayed outside for 5-10 minutes before had to head back inside the helicopter. What an experience though. Thank you for sharing, Jeff.

These are great. I like the mystery of #2; it could almost be the crash site of the alien craft from "The Thing". But unlike most of the people here, I like #1 the best. It's perfect.

Guess I got that conversion nailed, this time.

Glad you all enjoyed these, I'm really liking #1 the more I look at it, and I printed an 8x10 today that looked good. I might have to push that one up to 12x18 and see how it does.

BTW, the first one is the west side of the Indian Peaks Wilderness Area, and 2 and 3 are of the Rollins Pass area.
