Rob, great images!

I remember both and they are just beautiful, stunning colors.

James,

so far I never encountered your problem, but maybe the foam pad is a good idea, it probably makes the camera even easier to handhold.

As for my 280/4 Apo, I just made a brief test against the 300/4L IS on the 1Ds, same subject and distance, 1/500 sec f/4 putting the lens on a support, no IS.
Wide open they give more or less the same detail, maybe the 280 has a slight edge, but the 280/DMR combo should be visibly better because of the higher magnification.
The 1Ds has only about 5% more linear resolution, not enough to compensate for the 1.37x cropping factor of the DMR.

Is the 280/4 Apo equal or maybe worse than the 300/4L IS wide open ?!?

A trip to Solms is needed...

It should be twice as good. I shot my 105-280mm wide open against my 300mm f4 L non IS on a Canon 1D and the Canon lens looked out of focus compared to the Leica.

James To

The battery on my DMR also moves in-and-out when I push it inadvertently with my palm but it has never powered down nor have I lost images as a result of this. My understanding is that not all units exhibit this behavior.

Guy described the 280/4 APO as razor sharp and if I remember correctly that was wide open, and maybe even better than both versions of the new 180's, both of which may even outdo the 100 macro. Seems like something may be wrong with your your 280.

Just left the 280 to my dealer, who will send it to Solms for a complete revision.

He also lent me a 35-70/3.5 Germany, to test against my 35-70/4 ROM.
He said that many prefer it to the current f/4.
I know it is a Minolta design, no ROM available and it has an awfully long mfd (1 meter...) but I'm curious nonetheless because I like its compactness and integrated hood.

Today I also bought from another dealer a used Summicron-M 28/2 Asph for my M8 and incidentally he also stated that the 35-70/3.5 Germany is better than the current 35-70/4... though nothing (even primes) beats the 35-70/2.8, he had one that he showed me, but I couldn't handle it because it was already sold for mere 6300 €...

Looks like someone took his ball and went home.

Sad, I really liked playing with that ball.

Hope everyone had a Merry Christmas.

After following the original DMR Bible from its inception, I finally made the full commitment by purchasing Kurt s R9/DMR and his full Telyt system(280,400,1x,1.4x and2x). I know from the thread that you can benefit by tuning the R9 to a specific screen and magnifier. So far looks pretty spectacular and I was using Leica and Zeiss lenses on my 5D.

wow, congratulations!
You will REALLY like the R9/DMR tele modules, esp for wildlife but also for sports and landscape.
I use the Brightscreen magnifier, but went back to the standard scr5een. The big micrprism just was too busy and often back focused.
I had my standard screen ($72) brightened and crop lined by Bill Maxwell, and like it a lot.

Welcome to the slippery slope. It seems more and more people are buying a DMR.

If you need any lenses, don't forget to post some queries here. I think between the DMR owners here, we have tried pretty well every Leica R lens made.

Talk about jumping in with both feet Glad Kurt was able to find a home for his gear and that the buyer is a member of the FM family.

It worked out well for both parties. Hopefully, everything is fine-tuned for Roger's benefit...he's a very nice guy.

I'm hoping that more and more people discover the DMR as it is a fantastic image-making machine. I haven't totally abandoned ship ... I'll be back with the R10. I just need to simplify my gear load for awhile ... I haven't had as much time lately to shoot with the really long glass. Might as well put it into someone's hands who has the time to really appreciate it.

Kurt Is that the Leica Groundglass Screen you left in the R9 ..it seems perfect for the 80 1.4...I am blesssed with great eyesight and can focus this in an almost dark room ..the eyepiece magnifier also gets a 2 thumbs up. Did a focus test at 4 feet 80 1.4 DOF width of a line of type thats amazing.

Yep...at least on this DMR, it is the perfect combination. It makes working with the 80lux pure joy.

Anyone have any advice on sensor cleaning? I have a couple of (stuck) specks of dust on my DMR, and not sure what to use to get them off. I hope its not a "send it to NJ" solution.

Leica has specific recommendations in their manual, but are those items available here in the US?

Any help would be great. Thanks, and happy new year, all members present and absent.

Dear Goeff

Sensor swabs and eclipse solution work very well, esp stuck or grease (eg accidental finger brushing the sensor while trying to get the @#$%$# doo0r opened or closed. )

I've tried all,but this just works.
One or two passes, dries and seems perfect.

Regards
Victor

PS: the real trick is finding eclipse, since can't be shipped normally, too flammable. Penn camera has and other top line stores. Some MAY ship, but I think only ground.

What type of Quick Release brackets are you using on your DMR s? I use a RRS L bracket on my 5D and think it works great . Doesn t look like RRS or Kirk make an L bracket for the R9/DMR. Not sure I will like a small quick release plate because it will unbalance the camera when sitting on its base. Just saw that RRS has released an L bracket for the M8. Looking for experience.

I'm interested too, as I really like the RRS L-plate for my 1Ds.

I'd love to have one for the DMR.

I noticed too that RRS has an L-plate for the M8, but IMO it is less important because the M-system is quite light, so a tripod-centered weight is less important.
It is also not very much suited for closeups, where rotating the tripod head 90° could cause a visible shift in centering the framing.

On the DMR instead an L-plate would be quite useful.

Suggestions ?

We could always ask RRS or Kirk to make one for the DMR. I'd buy one if it weren't too outrageous.

I'm currently using the Kirk camera plate and their "universal" L-bracket, which bolts onto the the camera plate. Not nearly as nice a solution as the Kirk or RRS plates.

How much interest would there be in a RRS or Kirk L-bracket?

You can put me on the list to prepay if RRS will make a batch. Having used their L bracket for over a year on the Canon 5D with Battery Pack, I miss the tight integration of their bracket with the body.

Unfortunately the image above seems to be the last with the Leica for a while, my R8/DMR seems to have locked up completely
I removed the power module, opened the back and cleaned the sensor, then shut the back and remounted the PM, but probably touched the rewind button because the motor started to run. After a few seconds it stopped and after that the camera will not release. Everything else seems to work, review, menu, on/off button etc. I've removed the PM, opened the back to rotate the film sprocket wheel, cleaned contacts, etc., but nothing seems to work, I have even reinstalled firmware 1.1. Any suggestions?
