I can only write for myself, my experience and what I'd do.
First, it depends on how deep your fiscal pockets are. Second, there's way too many possible uses to define a list for a set of lenses. You need to define your uses and a budget so choices can be offered.
From what little I could gleen from your above comment, the first two lenses that I'd recommend would be a Sigma 20/1.8 and a Canon 24-105/4.0L IS. These two lenses would be a wonderful start to any high quality kit that would meet your above requirement. From there, lenses can be added.
Yes, 24-105 for travel.
Yes, 24-70L for journalism.
Yes, 85/1.8 for indoor sports.
Yes, Sigma 20/1.8 for indoor like restaurant shots.
Are you going be doing full frame (FF) like a 5D or 1.6x crop like a 30D?
