Headed over to the local high school today to test out some new gear. Lights suck so I had to shoot the 1D at ISO 3200. All shots are around 1/400th at 2.8 at 300mm on a Sigma 120-300. Light noise ninja and Max's website resize....
3. Last one...ISO 3200 on the 1D is just gross...but the Sigma focuses fast...first time out with it. I like it so far...we will see how things go under better light soon.
Are you using battery packs for your strobes or do you plug them in somewhere? I'd like to try them, but my main field house, which is big and very poorly lit, does not have power outlets I can use. If battery packs, how hard is that to carry around and set up?
Volleyball would be hard to shoot outside in the middle of the day. It's just cruel and unusual for us to try to shoot it indoors under poor lighting.
I like the expression in #1, but without a ball its a downer.
#2 is good and is my favorite, because I always feel I am cheating when I go up on the catwalk to get the serves like in #3. But they are all plenty good for parents to buy. You really don't need to make the pixel peepers happy on FM.
And you're right Carl...Volleyball just cries out to be strobed. I hope to see some of those posts.
Shane, my strobes are AC power. I thought about the Vagabond set up from AB and the JTL Mobilights, but they only last a couple hundred flashes per charge and the recycle is slower...
Mark, Vball outside in the middle of the day today would have been under 3" of snow....

The other thing that sucks about the Vags is that even though one can power four heads, you still need all that wiring to network them. So, it's no longer time efficient on one hand and if you get one Vag for each head, it's no longer cost efficient on the other hand.
Carl, These look pretty good for 3200 ISO on the 1D.I like #2 and #3 best.Have you strobed Volleyball before? I have not had a chance to try the strobes for Volleyball yet.
The vagabond is a pricey option at 350 a pop, but perhaps the Tronix 1200 at 250 each would be a better option? 2 of them and some extension cords, you could run 4 lights.
Also, why not get the super long extension cords. It comes in hundreds of feet, and has a storage wheel thing, kinda like long garden hoses, to lay it out and store it again. Then you could find power pretty much anywhere within 250 feet. Definitely the recycle times will suffer, but it's an option.
And you could lower the power to boost recycle times, because with the 1D, you can shoot a faster shutter to kill ambient

Scott, no, I have not strobed volleyball yet. It looks like I will be shooting for their boosters next season, So I have to figure out how to do it....For freshmen, or C-Team, which they have two of, and JV, they will have up to 4 courts set up with games going on each court. For Varsity, they take down all the courts and put one court up in the middle and pull the bleachers down. Could be spending more time repositioning strobes than actually shooting.....

Max, I would even say get the extention cords with the LED lights that make the plugs glow. That way, if your strobe is not working, the first think you can check is the power cable by just looking at it.....
