p.1 #1 · Canon 1200mm Lens

Is the canon 1200mm lens actually available to the public

After enquiring into many shops both over here and in the US i have been given a variety of information. Some have said that it costs near to $60,000 while some have said that it is not available to the general public.

I have yet to see anyone using this lens or speaking about it and i wonder is it just a myth or is it just for the wealthy and the super pros

I'm just curious.

I don't think it's a myth. The price I've heard is $80,000. At that price, it might as well be a myth. You'd have to be as wealthy as Arnold Schwarzanegger to buy this and probably as strong as him to carry it around for any distance.

It's listed at AC-foto.de for Euro 110.000
I do not expect they have it in stock!
I once read there are about 10 in use world-wide!

Han!

p.1 #4 · Canon 1200mm Lens

EF 1200mm 5.6L USM.

Features
Lens construction: 13 elements in 10 groups
(protective glass and drop-in filter included)
Diagonal angle of view: 2-5
Focus adjustment: Inner focusing system with USM
Closest focusing distance: 14m / 46ft
Filter size: 48mm rear drop in

Canon's most powerful supertelephoto lens

The world's largest interchangeable SLR AF lens, in terms of both focal length and maximum aperture. Two large fluorite elements eliminate secondary spectrum, resulting in extremely sharp, high-quality images. With Extender EF 1.4x or 2x. a whopping focal length of 1700mm f/8 or 2400mm f/11 can be obtained respectively.

I especially like the part about using 1.4x and 2x converters and Canon using the word "whopping".

For 110000 I would rather buy a 911 Turbo, while they still make it.

If you can read Korean more info here: http://www.photoart.co.kr/magazine/contents/0107/2001_07_03_02.html

And if you can't:
http://babelfish.altavista.com/babelfish/urltrurl?url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.photoart.co.kr%2Fmagazine%2Fcontents%2F0107%2F2001_07_03_02.html&lp=ko_en&tt=url

The above pages are amazing (the translation is very poor, maybe someone knows of a better service), basically dedicated to the extremes in lenses (Canon is the most expensive) ...

Widest: Nikkor 6/F2.8
Longest: Nikkor 2000/F11 & SMC Pentax-M 2000 f/13.5
Expensive: Canon 1200/F5.6L
Heaviest: SMC Takumar 67800
Fastest: Specialty F0.75 and F0.85 lenses (I am not sure how this is possible)
Most complex: Canon EF 35-350 f/3.5-5.6

Incredible stuff.

For the size, weight and cost of this lens it should come with its own time zone or atleast postal zip code.

Mark,

Without an Image Stabilizer it's a *real* bugger to hand-hold! lol

Check out this link. It shows a 1200 in action.

http://www.dvinfo.net/canon/images/images17.php

Anyone recently see the program on the Polar Bears of Churchill MB? Without getting to involved there was a photog using a 1200.

In one of the scenes they showed a bus touring around and upon approaching some polar bears the bus windows came down and a dozen or so white lenses appeared. Cool.

I think I go for the f/4 version. The 2.8 may be a little too much to handhold!

...Remember that the XL1 EOS adapter multiplies the focal length of any EOS lens by a factor of 7.2, so this 1200mm lens had an effective 35mm equivalent focal length in the neighborhood of 8640mm...

The 1200 is built to order, and the price is fixed at order, depending on the cost of raw materials 'at that time'. (According to Canon)

That's why you're unlikely to find a stock (new) lens at a dealers..that and the huge investment they'd have sitting on their books.

I'd love to know how many of these they actually make a year?

Only ever seen one 'live' once, at a British Superbikes race at Rockingham.

It was being used to get a really compressed shot of the bikes down an infield straight, and it was just HUGE!

My local Pro EOS dealership said that they did sell one once, to the local Police...........

I wonder what they needed one for? ;-)

Well, try this out for size....
http://www.dvinfo.net/canon/images/images17.php

A 1200 f/5.6 attached to a Canon XL1S and a 2x TC giving a total effective focal length of 17,280mm. Looks like a small rocket launcher. On second thoughts, not so small....

Anybody compared the image quality to the 600/4 IS plus the 2xII to the 1200/5.6 at f8?

ROTFLMAO!

What is Canon XL1S? Doesn't Canon only have the 1.4x and 2x TC?

the canon xl1s is a pro standard video camera made by canon.

With an adaptor it can accept all eos series lens's.
