I don't care about people like this at all, until they start advertising themselves as wedding photographers and charging £250 for a wedding and making the professionals look like expensive rip-off merchants until the couple finally see their s**t album the 30D dickwad gives them.

what i hate isnt someone who buys a 20d and doesnt know how to use it, what i hate is when i see a bastard in union square taking pics with a 1ds mkII and a 24-70L taking pics of dogs... thats a damn professional camera man, not for trivial pics..

Doesn't mean they'll never know about it! People aren't born with an intimate knowledge of what A-dep means Maybe the best thing would be to answer their questions or point them in the right direction, so they don't have to ask the same questions again.

Who really cares. I'm sure a salesman at the local camera store convinced him it was the best camera around and that he just had to have it.
By the way, how do I get the live LCD to work on my new 30d? I looked the manual up and down and I cant find it anywhere. How can I get a good picture if I can't see what I'm shooting? I think its time to send it back to Canon.

a 20d/30d is a family cam, a 1dsII is not
Whats wrong with the PRO that wants to take some relax time in Union Square and shoot some candids or pics of dogs with his gear?

I don't understand most of the functions of the 20D but use it anyway when necessary. For example I couldn't use the white balance with a gun to my head, nor understand the icons on the little LCD display, jpeg functions, AI sevo etc. But who cares? My goal is not to be a salesman. Aperture on one dial, shutter speed on the other, bar in the viewfinder for exposure and the human brain to judge metering... That is what really matters. The rest is for the technogeeks.

I wasn't going to post this experience...until I seen this topic. I was picking up my 20D. A 16 year (give or take) wanted a 5D.
His mom states: what is wrong with this one (30D)?
Boy: This one has more MP.
Mom: Well, I do like your shots from the disposables....
Boy: Can I get it?
Mom: Sure
WHAT?!?!?!? I felt like beating the kid with my 50/1.8II. I figured I could've bought one again while I was in line...

Well I use the 1Ds MK II for taking images of the family dogs. They are not trivial! Dogs are more loyal and loving than most people, and certainly more precious in the long run than any of the more serious subjects like a landscape or wildlife, etc. So why not take the best images possible? The 1Ds MK II is very good for pets, as the extra detail in the fur really pops out and looks more lifelike than with lesser cameras.

I really shoudnt care one way or the other but some stupidity just rubs me the wrong way. I was at another forum (one that will remain nameless) and someone posted that they had just bought a 30D and that the camera was far more advance than they were ready for. They said the had read the manuel 3 times and still didnt get it, and they ask if someone could explain ISO, what are A-DEP, M, Av, Tv, P,and what is WB.
I wanted to scream.... You just spend over $1000 on somethign that you know nothing about. I should be use to this by now, considering that we all know money doesnt equal brains. Maybe Im just upset that I wasted my time reading the post to begin with....Show more →

You are all missing the big picture! The guy wants to learn and he knows his limitations! He read the manual three times, which is three times more than most people stumbling around the internet! Equipment envy will get you nowhere. Maybe he's starting with a 30 but who cares? He wants to learn. That's what counts.
He's receptive to learning. Send him here. Give the guy the help he deserves.

I take photos of my dog quite often. Occasionally I'll bring the 30D + 70-200/4 combo to the dog park and take pictures of all the other dogs. If I had the funds to upgrade to a 1Ds MkII, I would.. and I would still take photos of my dog.
What's your point? If I'm setting up a tripod shoot with dawn/dusk lighting of an ancient desert ruin, or taking shots of dogs having a great time at the park, I'm still the same photographer (admittedly far from as good a one as I'd like to be) with the same skillset. Also, there are many professional pet photographers out there, and I'm sure many of them use top-of-the-line gear like the mkII. Should they downgrade because of the subject matter?

I'd blame the salesperson. They are obviously more concerned about the $$$ than doing the customer a favour.Unless they offer free shoot classes as is the case with the better retailers in Oz.

i bought my 20D and i didn't know how to use the dang thing until i started reading the manual and went out and used the camera and went on forums like this to ask questions. whats wrong with that? lets not forget we were all newbies at one time.
