Just installed the firmware. It appears, from my test shots anyway, that they cleared up some of the quality problems in ISO shots above 200. At ISO 400 (formerly pretty rough results IMO) the quality is much better and appears much like shots I took at ISO 200...that's very nice.

At ISO 800, the quality is much better than before and offers a tiny bit less noise than pre-firmware upgrade ISO 400. It at least offers shooting high quality up to ISO 400...that's a big improvement. Then, at ISO 800, you use the noise relievers.

Exposure seems a bit more accurate also...mine was over-exposing a stop and a half...now it's dead on...I see it as a welcomed improvement. Hope it's not my imagination...ROFL

i would imagine this firmware changes that situation carl...i suspected all along it was an in-camera computer problem. but that's a pure guess on my part...since i have a good one now my only gripe came from the poor image quality at iso 400...that's no longer a problem.

I was hoping for added WA functionality for use of Lexar cards. But I just did a burst test and it appears that it takes my 10D the same time to clear the buffer. :-(

I performed the update this morning using the Mac binhexed version that is available at this url:

http://www.canon.co.jp/Imaging/dc/10D_101-e.hqx

Everything went without a hitch and the exposure does seem spot on now. Previously I was having to dial in a negative exposure (about 1/3 to 2/3 stop) in order to avoid the blown highlights.

That is great news about the ISO improvements you've observed, Larry.

I'm going to continue using the updated firmware and will report if I observe anything new.

Lou...in-camera format your CF card. And then put the CF card in your card reader
Download the zip file from the net
Unzip
You'll see a bunch of stuff in there, but all you want is the "firmware File" in the upper left.
just highlite it and choose "move this file"
Move it to just the drive letter of your card reader

once moved put the CF card in your camera...it will recognize the firmware...
bingo

Do you have a choice but to continue using it? There's no reverting I thought.

There is a way back...

Send the camera to Canon and they can flash the camera bios back to the old FW.

Can't imagine this is free...?

Hi larry,
The ISO noise improvement you are talking about is in jpg only (in-camera conversion improved) or even for RAW processed out of camera with your usual workflow ?

Well, I haven't updated my husband's 10D yet, so I could always "revert" to that one, .

i only shoot in raw cedric...so i see a big difference in iso 400 tiff images.
this at least gets me out of shooting in just iso 100-200, which isn't horrible, but it is limiting...I do not like the use of noise reducers as they decrease detail...and considering the cost of my equipment I want the most for my money not the least.
