Best place to check are the chain websites like Best Buy and Circuit City. If you check at the right moment, they might have some. They seem to be getting more stock than the specialty camera stores. However, if banding is a concern, I'd hold off until you're sure the stores are getting stock from new manufacturing runs. That's what I'm doing.

I suspect that in a few months, everyone will have plenty of stock. If Nikon gives a rebate on it, you'll know there's too much stock. I bought my D70 in October of 2004. A few weeks after I bought it, there was a rebate on it.

The PMA show is at the end of February. If there are going to be any announcements of new cameras in the near future, it will probably be at that show. But anything they announce wouldn't be available for months anyway. And if they announce anything, it will either be (IMHO) top of the line (above the D2x and D2Hs) or bottom of the line (below the D50) and priced quite differently than the D200.

Well, Onecall.com has the D200 + 18-70 kit in stock at least.

I called Nikon and they said there are shipments coming in this month. However they will be sold to the dealer's waiting list first, I guess.

p.1 #9 · D200 Question

My post is kind of odd because you are asking about the availability of the D200 but since you mentioned "I have to upgrade" I felt compelled to write my comments.
I am sure that by now you know the D70 is a great camera. I am sure that if you have been using sound photographic techniques your pictures from this camera have to be excellent. What I see is that you are kind of short on lenses although I admit that you can do very well with what you have right now so it is only your experience and your photographic needs which will determine if any other lenses are necessary in your bag.
I do not intend to be rude but do not expect miracles simply because you are buying the latest. If you do not like your photography with the D70 believe me, you will not be happy either with the D200. Do not expect to see a dramatic change in quality with the D200. It simply will not happen.
I spent the past week end with John Shaw. He had many prints from different Nikon cameras there, some of them scanned, others from the D100 and finally some from the D2X. He invited the audience to tell which picture was made with the F3, film camera, the D100 and which one with the D2X. I saw nobody able to tell the differences or identify which camera shot which picture. I could not for sure!
If you need a good tripod that would be my first choice. A tripod, with a good head, is not an accessory, it is a necessity. A 12-24 lens, if you are into landscape, would be a very nice choice also. For portraits or moderate tele effects your Sigma should serve you well.
I hope you understand my reasoning. Improve your techniques and concentrate on seeing the light to improve on your photography. The D70 is an excellent tool and with the money you will save by not buying the latest now you can improve your photography even further and be better prepared in the future for the new camera, be it the D200 or any other.
Hope this gives you some clues to reflect on.

The funniest thing about that thread is that this guy is pulling everyones leg and half of them are really trying to help him. There is a sucker born every minute.

Hey Bob, I'll let you in on a secret. It's me!!! Obviously people don't read every post or look at who wrote the post. I have given myself up several times and not everyone has caught on. I'll see how far I can take it

Your post blends in perfectly.... it's just another post at that forum!
Ask what full frame is because you've decided you think you need it.

Actually, there is enough wasted space over there. Best to not waste your time with such things.

Cheers,
Craig

If that is you Kevin, good job. I was LMAO last night. Especially the theme about your high school teacher telling you were good at drawing and therefore with 25K in top end Nikon, you should be a really good photographer.
