I had the unfortunate luck of having my Tamron 28-75mm fall off my camera at an event last Thursday. I had the camera cradled in my left hand and I guess somehow the lens release button was depressed enough to where the lens come free. I watched the lens drop to the tile floor and bounce three times before my testicles retreated within my body and I let out a high pitched gradeschool girl screech.
I put the lens back on and amazing enough it actually still works. The only issues are the focus rings sticks at one end and it's now crazy soft wide open. From 5.6 up is perfect.
So I had all intentions of buying the same lens to replace the busted one but made the mistake of testig the Nikkor. I had no personal experience at seeing what differences can occur with color renditioning with different lenses since the Tamron was my first and only. The color from the Nikkor is soooo much more on point and the focus is fast! Not only that but at wide open it's just as sharp as the Tamron in it's sweetspot. I've only done some measurebating around the house so far and will post some pics as soon as I shoot something worthwhile.
The only bad thing about having bought this lens is the fact that I can't eat lunch for a month and it's much bigger than my previous lens. Nevertheless I'm more than happy with my new addition.
Another things is it's amazing how much difference can be found within the same lenses from unit to unit. I tested two of the Nikkors and one was much sharper than the other....guess it paid off to be picky picky and test before I bought.
Had you tried any other 2.8's in that range before settling on the Nikon? I am going to be buying a 2.8 in that range sometime this month, and am curious what else is available.

No I really didn't. All the other options were in the same price range and since I felt comfortable with the Tamron I never really looked at the Sigma or Tokina. Once I did some test shots with the nikkor it was all over with from there. Sorry I couldn't help you out much on that.
