p.1 #1 · D1H, D1 vs. D70s, D200?

I've been a member who loves to read your posts (a wealth of information there) but hasn’t posted much himself. Hopefully I won’t make a fool of myself now.

I currently use a D1H & D1 as a backup for taking landscape & wildlife photos. My wife has just started using a D70s.

We spent the day in Fernandina Beach photographing the marina, seagulls, pelicans, sea otters, ect… a wonderful day. After we downloaded our captures I was amazed at the difference in sharpness and color of the images that were straight out of the D70s, compared to the D1H. My wife’s images required so little post processing! My assumption that the D70s is a consumer camera and therefore less capable of capturing the same quality images of the “pro” cameras has been dashed! Has the technology changed that much in such a short time to make such a dramatic difference in image quality? It’s got me thinking of a D200 now. "...the future's so bright I got to wear shades."

I`d have to think 6 MP`s vs 2.74 would have something to do with it but more so the fact that the consumer D70s might be tuned more for sharper ,more colorful mages straight from the camera .
The D1 and D1h are full bored Pro models that would normally require shooting Raw and post processing to get the most out of the capture.

I don't know how far back it was (may be two weeks or so?), I posted a comparison between D100, D70 and my new D200. You might want to take a look. The D100 has better image quality (by alot) than the D1 and D1H, but the D70 is clearly better than the D100 (you'll see this in my comparo), and the D200 is better than that. Whether the D200 is worth twice the money that you'd pay for a D70s is another story in itself (answer: depends, but not clear cut, IMHO).

Yes, I have to agree about the difference in 6MP's vs. 2.74 (even though I thought that the "pro" MPs were not the same as the "consumer" MPs) and we both shoot in raw format. My amazement is in the baseline from where we both have to start our post processing. The D70s raw files need far less processing...that's my point of disillusionment and unrest. Hopefully by upgrading to a D200 I will be able to spend less time on the post processing and will not be so shocked by the difference in image quality from the next generation of cameras.

As I implied with my previous post, I wouldn't dismiss out of hand getting a D70s either...

I have not read your comparison post but will do so. Interesting point about whether the D200 is worth twice the cost of a D70s. Haven't heard that question being raised before. Are you suggesting that beyond build quality the two are more or less equal in image quality? I’d like to hear more on that.

Just finished reading the thread on the D70, D100 & D200 comparisons & it answers my question on comparative image quality. Thanks, Mike

I was hoping it would be helpful. I actually enjoyed doing the comparo. The bottom line for me is that if I had known about the image quality difference (more minor than I would have hoped) between the D70 and D200, and owned a D70 (My wife uses the D70, I still had been using a D100: difference in image quality is significantly larger between D100 and D200), I might have decided not to spend the money right now. I'd say that the D70's image quality splits the difference between the D100 and the D200. Hey, If I really wanted to spend more money, I could have bought the Sigma 120-300 that's over in B&S (and I want) for less money than the cost of the new camera. Will the new camera get me as many more high quality images as a new piece of glass?

Don't get me wrong, the D200 is fantastic. It produces excellent results. However, I was producing (IMHO) excellent 13x19in images from the D100 as well. Will I get more keepers? Most likely (but I would have gotten more keepers that need less post processing by buying a D70 for half the money too). Will it be more fun than my D100? Definitely, at least until I get NAS (Nikon Acquisition Syndrome) again!

Thanks for your replies to my post. It's been a rather enlightening experience seeing the results from this weekend’s photo-op. Technological changes can have dramatic affects on our work, straight out of the camera. In the future I won’t be so quick to dismiss Nikon’s “consumer grade” equipment.
