Would you mind explaining the benefits and purpose of using the Fm3a split image K screen? I googled it but I'm still a little sketchy.
The split-image focus screen is from 35mm film days. (see here http://www.mir.com.my/rb/photography/hardwares/classics/nikonf3ver2/screens//) Though it explains the Fm3, it will relate to the D1 series.
On a D1x/h you can custom set the center weighted metering to the aproximate circle size on the actual screen. The D1 series meters best for me in this mode. The type K screen is a combination of a Type A and J screen. Matte/Fresnel field with 3mm split-image rangefinder spot surrounded by 1mm-wide microprism doughnut.
With my D1x/h in MF mode with AI lenses where I have to stop down, there is some darkening somewhere around f/8. I just focus wide open, meter the exposure, set the f/stop and shoot. In A mode, just meter and shoot. "No Prob Mon".
Add A DK-17m, focusing a macro, tele, or most anything else is fantastic. The D1/2 series cams have the biggest and brightest viewfinders I have ever used (besides film). If you can't focus with this combination, you should contact Social Security and apply for blindness benifits.
If you order the K-3 screen, contact me about how to modify it for D1 use (easy effortless job).
