I have heard many times that Nikon’s auto focus system is superior to Canon’s and I am wondering if there is any truth to this. I have a 1D and a 1D MkII and no experience with Nikon other than an old Nikkormat Ftn film camera. If anyone with experience with both brands could comment I would appreciate it.
With all respect John, you didn't hear this from Nikon shooters did you ??
I'm a Canonite myself and I'd be largely overwhelmed if the NIkon equivalent to my goods was any better. I'd hazard a guess at it being equal.
I can't see HOW it could be any better.
I have actually heard it from fellow Canon users as well as some Nikon (D2X) users..I thought I would check with members of this and the Nikon forum to see what others have to say on the topic. FWIW I am happy with my gear but I keep an open mind
You can't treat all Canons as having the same AF capability. The 1-series has good AF. Pretty much all the others leave a bit to be desired, in my experience.
John, I have owned a Nikon system both film and digital for over 15 years and have added a Canon digital system in the last couple of years.
The Nikon F5 camera was a great film camera for shooting sports and action and portrait work. I started with a D1 and added a D1H, and D2h camera. The auto focus in these cameras is very good especially the D2h.
I decided to sell some stuff and start to build a Canon system because of the noise problems at higher ISO numbers in the Nikon gear. The D2hs has solved that problem for the most part I think. I have a buddy who owns one and seems to be happy with the noise level at 1600 and gets usable images at 3200.
After my experience with the Canon ID and the Mark II and good quality Canon glass I would say that they are pretty close with Nikon getting a small edge in low light situations. In good light outdoor shooting both are great in my opinion.
