The metz strong point is it's auto mode. I use 10 and 1dm2 but have used it on auto mode on a relatives 20d. It's a religion thing ttl or auto. Make your choice and defend it to the death or the next upgrade cycle.
It works only after software update, it's got to be a version II. After they upgraded my software it works superb, imo it works better than the Canon Flashes.
When you have the Metz with the wink light there is no reason to use a diffuser... I am getting much better results with this flash with no diffuser than I had gotten with a 420Ex and the stofen.

That 'wink' light doesn't work in ETTL, in other words you can use ETTL straight or bounced with a bounce card but if you so much as put on the Metz Mecabounce, ETTL will stop being accurate. Auto mode will work with any diffuser that doesn't block the sensor or throw light into it.

True, but the Metz in Auto with the camera in M is a great combo that eliminates the need for the diffuser.
When you need fill flash I use the Metz in E-TTL and the camera in Aperature Priority. No need for a diffuser here either.
So far my use of the Metz has eliminated the need for a diffuser and resulted in better exposed flash shots overall.
I use the mecabounce always for straight flash as the auto sensor cannot shut the power down fast enough for wider apertures especially at closer distances (faster than f4 and or under 1m), the mecabounce makes a big difference here. The fill light gives a rather harsh shadow though far less obnoxious than if the flash was fired straight on.
Radamo, if you can't see the difference between diffused flash, including outdoor fill, with a diffuser then I doubt I can pursuade you otherwise, but I garuantee you that the photo below is not a result of straight flash!

.Anybody out there with Canon D20 and Metz 54MZ 4 ? Question is TTL mode
working or not with this combination ?
Thanks for respond.
It depends. In order to use eTTL II on 20D, you need the detachable SCA 3102 M3 module (the flash foot). If the flash has M2, you can send it in to update the firmware to M3 for free (call Bogen Imaging if in U.S.).
Also, Metz implement eTTL in a different way than Canon. It uses an external sensor to measure the lighting. That particular sensor is in the flash head and that is why you can not use a flash diffuser to cover it such as Sto-Fen, when you use eTTL mode on the flash. The sensor is at lower left corner if it is facing you (a small circle). This is not the same sensor for its auto mode which is on the flash body. You can use the diffuser in Manual or automode just fine.
