p.1 #1 · troubles: canon 24-105 IS or tamron 28-75?

Hello, I would like to by one or two lenses to replace my sigma 18-200mm to have more versatility and quality.
The choice is between 24-105 IS or tamron 28-75mm, wider range or more light (f2.8)? It will be a lot all-round. The price is not very important but I want to by something I need.
After this I will watch at a telelens (xx-300?)
Can you advise me how complete my lens collection?

firstly, if you are considering the 24-105 IS, then obviously price is no concern for what you would spend on the f/2.8 zoom. certainly this choice would be the 24-105 IS or the 24-70 f/2.8 L...............both of these Canon zooms are excellent, well built and weather sealed.
what kind of shooting are you going to do?

i have the 24-70 for shooting some action and a lot of product shots where i want good bokeh.
i have the 17-85 IS for any occasion shots, but after trying out the 24-105 (again), it's my next purchase in the upcoming week.............

I considered 24-105 L or Tamron 28-75mm 2.8 and not 24-70 L, I would use the lens as allround (nature, travel...). I am impressed from the review about tamron lens and his 2.8f: great for insidephoto's) but the range is not very all-round.
Do you suggest to by both canon and tamron?

Hi,
I am not sure about the Tamron lens sharpness but the Canon 24-105 mm is a Canon L lens with all that it means.

I do have a Tamron 200-500 zoom and have been pleasantly surprised at the quality of its images.

Now the decision is yours.

my suggestion is to go with both Canon zooms. first you will not be happy with the wide end on the Tamron, i know it seems like only 4 mm, but on the 1.6x crop body you are using it becomes 6.4mm more in the wide area. obviously i'm showing some partialism towards Canon vs the Tamron, but i've seen just about every Canon 24-70 vs Tamron 28-75 photo comparisons ever posted on the net, and every time the Canon wins in sharpness and color production.
if you buy the Canon 24-105 and the Tamron 28-75, do you think you will be happy with trying to edit the Tamron images to match the colors of the Canon 24-105?

if only buying one of the above lenses then you have to ask yourself what you really need?

OK, I have decided for de canon 24-105mm.......Both canon L lenses is too expensive: I will still use the canon 50mm 1.4f to take pictures inside or I will use my speedlite flash often then now. Maybe another 2.8 f lens less expensive then canon 24-70 L?

good choice.....buy the 24-70 later if you decide you still want an f/2.8 zoom.

a good solution to using flash and not getting that harsh flash effect is to get one of these (assuming you have a 580EX).........they have one for most canon flashes............

I had both the Canon 24-105 IS and the Tamron 28-75 and I prefer the performance, zoom range, and IS on the Canon. That said, the Tamron is still an excellent lens and I gave it to my daughter.

I had one of the 24-105 models that Canon replaced and I really missed having it during the 2+ weeks it went back to Canon

I lost my Tamron 28-75 overseas last month and replaced it with the Canon 24-105L However the Tamron was found and shipped back to me so now I have both!

The Tamron is a great lens and the f/2.8 is definately handy ... but if you can afford the Canon it's much better (build, focussing, sharpness, colour, range and of course IS).

I had the Tamron first, and just recently purchased the 24-105L. I initially planned on selling the Tamron after receiving the 24-105. Now I think I'll keep the Tamron because it is faster, smaller, lighter, and cheaper, and thus may be a better choice for certain travels. The Tamron is similar in sharpness to the L and a great overall performer for the price.

Do you prefer 24-105 because it has wider zoom range or it produces better pictures?
