p.1 #1 · D2x and what lens?

If I buy a $5,000 Nikon D2x, should I save $19 by getting a 3rd party lens for it? Please help me to make this decision.

I say you just go find and old glass pepsi bottle (remember those) and stick one of those in front of it. :-)

Yeah, but what actual yield of savings will that gain me? Anthing above $5 will worth it. My five thousand dollar SLR only deserves the least.

Who needs a lens? Just poke a hole in the body cap.

If you want the best, you need a Coke bottle, not a Pepsi bottle. And make sure it's Coke Classic, not that other stuff.

Just make a pin hole in the lens mount cover and save the cost of buying any lens. I heard the DX2 produces excellent pin hole images.

I think you should ditch the opaque cap that comes with the D2 series, and pick up one of those sweet transparent ones that come on the N65. That way you'll get more light in. This will allow you to stay away from the way too noisy ISO400+ on the D2X.

I wouldn't bother with a lens. I'd just borrow a CF card off someone who's actually taken pictures and just look at them on the LCD.

Maybe so, but the Classic version will still work with full-frame bodies...

I'm not sure about that? I hear there is some distortion if you keep the Coke in a "Barrel".

p.s. I love my Sigma 100-300.

D2x + cheap glass = you spent too much on a D2x

D2x + good glass + skill/talent/luck = Awesome Pictures!

Buy the best equipment you can afford and work to build you skill with it.

But only if they are shots of resolution charts and brick walls. Otherwise, what's the point?

How else would you know how good your camera is?

There are a number of shooters on these forums that have a great tendency to look down on "consumer" glass, be it 3rd party or otherwise (your 24-85 included, Scott). Much of this consumer glass in the right hands can create some awesome images. My wife and I have four Sigma EX lenses each of which is capable of making extraordinary images. Absolutely on par with the better Nikon lenses. If there is even a Nikon equivalent. Our Sigma 180 (and now the newer 150) is the ONLY macro on the market for Nikon that does 1:1 macro and has an internal focusing motor. Nikon can't even touch the versatility of this lens. It's outstanding from 18 inches to infinity. Great for flowers and bugs AND sports. AND it was half the price of the Nikon 200 macro, actually it was less than the Nikkor 180 which doesn't even close focus, nor have an internal focusing motor!

"Consumer" is a label that's applied by pundits, whose opinions are no more valid than yours or mine. I understand your point, though.
