p.2 #1 · Food for thought.........................................................

Nicodad wrote:
As far as the social commentary part of this is concerned: ever wondered how things would be if our society was matriarchal? Maybe this is something like "boys and their toys". Women donīt like to change things that work for something that works better, because good is good enough to them. With women sitting in mens places we might still work with 8086, if we had any computers at all. So maybe this is not so much "People spending their money" but "Men spending their money". Or maybe better "The Boy in the man"

Probably true, it just doesn't sound like very much fun. I would lose the will to live, I believe.

What's that smell, blood in the water?

Truly, you are blessed with a very practical woman. You both will get so much more out sharing photography than a high mark up, "prove your love" hunk of metal and mineral.

Wow, I wouldn't know what to do with 15 pairs of shoes, but I'd have no trouble figuring out what to do with a D200...

You may be right about that! My wife got an "engagement bicycle"... Much more useful than a piece of jewelry. And incidentally, she was proud of the money being spent on that instead of an engagement ring! And also incidentally, we just "upgraded" her bicycle this year. I had a friend who's wife "upgraded" the diamond engagement ring he had bought her (with his VERY HARD earned money - he was an underemployed artist) less than a year after they got married. She went from a 1/4 carat diamond to a 1/2 carat. I still remember how appalled I was. It's the symbolism that counts here, not the size or cost. The whole thing becomes meaningless then. I still remember when I was looking at engagement bands, and how the jewelers actually have a formula based on income that you're supposed to use to find the size diamond that you "should" buy!

Engagement bands are also part of our consumer society. The sooner we (both men and woman) can "divorce" ourselves from those trappings the better.

Well, maybe - a little squirming once in a while...

Hej, we went through 4 or 8 or I donīt know how many seasons of "Sex And The City". Almost half of whatīs going on there is based on women and shoes.
And at least some of the authors were women.

The D2X can now be had for under $4k. I hope that breaks the feeding frenzy for the D200.

In the states (at least) we are a consumer society. It ain't limited to the D200 or photography. It's a rare person who has developed a complete immunity.

Hi Steffan. Just teasing you a little. I do think that for some reason, women don't seem as interested in photography as the guys are. I'm not sure why, since it's such a creative and challenging pursuit. I've been hooked for quite a while.

Maybe it's cultural? Perhaps the ladies weren't introduced to photography as an artistic pursuit as early in life? Did the parents buy their daughters usable camera equipment at an early age? Those are probably all factors, I bet.

The creative women I know like to create things with a white sheet as a starting point. Be it painting, sculptural work, whatever. Somehow photography always is based on what is already existing, and the means of transfering reality into creation are technical. Maybe thatīs why women seem to enjoy more the use of a brush and oil paint than a camera. Nevertheless I find it very rewarding to capture moments in time and give them a meaning beyond reality. The use of cameras is somehow like a clamp around your head that forces you to look into one direction, but finding freedom within limitation is a goal in itīs own.

Hi:

No, I meant 4k. There is a $500 rebate too which is new. If I use the link I gave the rebate info does not show for me now either but it's in the original link and still good. Just go to Cameta Camera and check it out. It's a Nikon Rebate so it's good anywhere.

Cheers

Yeah, but you have to buy an additional $500 worth of stuff to get your rebate, so you're still spending AT LEAST $4500.

Actually the rebate works for any Nikon lens or speedlight or camera other than the D2X. So really you could spend another $100 on a 50mm 1.8 and get $400.00 back on the D2X.

check the list for eligible products. It said any Nikon lens.

Rene,

Gerald is right. It is a $500 rebate on additional stuff. So you would have to spend $500 over the price of the D2X to get the $500 back. Still a great deal.

If you need $500 worth of extra stuff, I suppose it really IS a good deal. Then again, you could sell the extra stuff on our B/S forum, or E-Bay it, I suppose...

"Women don't like to change things..."

What? Take a look at the number of pairs of shoes in a woman's closet.

Different people are jazzed by different things.
We are jazzed by photographic equipment.
If we weren't we would be here.

Without materialism/consumerism most of us would be out of work.
