p.1 #1 · which flash for D1x?

sorry, stupid question I know, but if it doesn't support ittl is there any point to getting the SB-800? Save some dough and get the 28?

Not a stupid question. While the D1X may not be iTTL compatible, the SB800 is dTTL compatible which makes it usable with your camera. I guess it boils down to whether or not there's a new camera in your future. If not I'd consider the SB80DX instead of the SB28DX as it's supposed to be the better of the two. If you have your sights on a 28 make sure its the DX or TTL is out of the question.

is the sb600 dttl compatible as well? possibly looking at that one for a cheaper option, then using it as a slave when I get an sb800.

get any old vivitar and put it in A Mode and you will be better off than using dTTL

Yes the 600 is dTTL compatible too.

John is right about using other speedlights in A mode. dTTL wasn't that great thus the reason for it's short life span.

I sold an old Vivitar on eBay several months ago and discovered that some older flashes have a high trigger voltage that can damage a digital camera.
