The last that I looked at in a shop cost just under $2000. But it was very worn out even if the glass was ok.

I both bought and sold mine for a bit under $3K in excellent condition, but missing the hood. On Ebay, mint copies with hood are selling for $3400-$3700. KEH will buy one from you for $2400 and sell it to you for $4100.

Wow Fred.......................these conversations push me closer to selling my 9 - copy. It's complete........even the original shipping carton. Only one small scratch on the foot..........hmmm.......$3,400

I can almost smell the IS version now

See what you bastards made me buy today with all your tempting!
After doing years of homework for that long glass lens I went for the Canon 500mm f/4.5L that's perfect for me in size and power with no new investment in a stronger mount system than I already have.

How interesting to get the equivalent of a 500 4.5 Sigma I would have to pay $4300 and still would not be as sharp or contrasty as the Canon 500 4.5 from test done in the past.
But I'll be fine and learn to love it

Seems that even when a lens in not repaired by Canon anymore (may 06)people still want them at all cost.
I would be first in line for a new Canon lens in this division but a 500 at 6 1/2 lbs 15.3" long won't be around maybe ever again.

Canon Man you won't be disappointed with your temptation. Like you , I managed to snag one in superb condition complete with original packing. I am delighted with the overall results. I previously owned a Sigma 500 f/4.5 .......... nice enough lens but can't quite compete with the Canon for contrast and sharpness. From a motorsport shooter's viewpoint the detail produced by the Canon is amazing.

Thank you for the idea of used market value of this lens. I now found one on Adorama used site for >$4000!!! I guess good condition one still has very good used market value...

I think $ 4000 is expensive. It's a very good lens but it's between 7-15 years old. No IS and a bit slower than the new version. Canon maybe not repair it, or they will stop soon. And the new version cost about $1200 more.
