p.1 #1 · Help prioritize my to buy list.

alright the holiday season is coming up i've been working hard i think i deserve to purchase some new toys for my kit. I'm a little confused as to what to buy next though, this is the order i originally had my to buy list and wanted a little advice if i should switch it around slightly. I need a lens to do some headshots of actor friends and such. and just recreational shooting of city, still life, and maybe some abstract shots (telephoto mostly)

I was going to buy the RRS Flash Bracket setup but held off on it just for a bit it is still on my list and i might get it along witht he purchae of the 24-70.

This is what i currently have
17-40 F4L and the Plastik Fantastik 50 1.8

The original order of the list goes as follows:

1. 70-200 2.8L IS
2. 24-70 2.8L
3. 180 3.5L Macro (still not a 100% sure on the 180 over the 100)

I agree with you to get the 70-200 IS as you are missing a telephoto zoom.

As for the 24-70L, I would ask you to think about it as you are planning to use it on a 1.6x body. I was running around with a 17-40L + 70-200/2.8 IS on my old Rebel 300D and I never found the need to fill in the 40-70mm focal length. You also have the 50mm prime so your gap is less (i sold off my 50/1.8 too!!). What i recommend you is to go out and try to borrow a 24-70 or 28-70 or 28-75 lens to play around and find out if the focal length will work for you. If you find yourself constantly having to switch between the 28-70 lens and your current 17-40L, i think you do not even need the 28-70 lens. If you are like me, you go need the extra mm on the long end and rather prefer the 17mm of the 17-40L. Remember you can "zoom in" by cropping but not vice versa. Personally, i want my walk-around lens to be a lens i can use without switching too often. As a result, when i upgraded to the 1DmkII, i had to get a 24-70L to get back the focal length i am used to..

180 macro: Do you really need to shoot at 1:1?? or are you more interested in close-up photography?? What i advise you is to either get some ext tubes or close-up filter (500D 77mm works great with the 70-200) and play with it.. ext tubes are a good idea as you can either sell them or slap on any macro lens to get even better magnification in the future... in a nutshell, you do need a dedicated macro lens to enjoy the world of close-up photography..

70-200 IS...no doubt should be next. It is a very useful lens and focal length. For what you described the only other consideration would be if you wanted to go for a lighter prime instead like the 135L. But if it were me, 70-200 without a doubt.
