p.1 #1 · D70 imaging problem

Hello fellow Nikon users,

I got the nikon D70 several months ago and been liking the camera, but lately I have been getting some file related problems. Few months ago, I noticed that some of the images were corrupted (in the sense that there was a line going through the image or even worse if the image was split with 2 tones). Ritz camera where I brought the camera told me that it was most likely the card that was causing the problem. Originally, I got the lexar card 1gig 80x card. Recently, I picked up the Sandisk Ultra II card (1gig) and the problem is occuring again. I am seriously wondering if it is the camera now

When you have 2 cards from different manufacturers experiencing the same symptoms, chances are good it is the camera....

I would try to hit the reset button on the bottom of the camera and reformat the card and see what happens.

So how does the problem come on - like when you started using the 2nd card did it work fine for a while then go bad? When it occurs does it gradually get more common or is it completely intermittent? Is there any pattern to it at all?

Basically, when I first started noticing the problem back in june (on a field trip)...I was doing transfer of images to my work laptop directly with usb cable and didnt have a problem transfering about 150 images. I went to transfer the data directly onto a cd to archive the images. About half way thru the process, I noticed that the file transfer was stuck on an image for about half hour. I was like okay....maybe a bad file

. I cancelled the the transfer and I brought up the image thru photoshop to see what was wrong and I noticed that the file was corrupted. I went to the next file and it was working fine until it got to the next corrupted file and when all said and done I had about 10 images were bad. I got myself a card reader everytime I went on a field trip so it can download the images without a problem. It happened again when I was transfering to a cd. I thought it was my computer, so I tried on my friend's computer and noticed the same problem. I had a class with ritz about the D70 back in late august and they upgraded my firmware. I went on an outing in downtown philly. I would get random pictures that were corrupted. When I brought it up with ritz sales rep, he indicated that it could be card, since the camera was working fine with regards to picture taking. I ended up ordering Sandisk Ultra II not too long ago. I still having a similar problem. It didn't get progressively worse....it is completely intermittent and there is no set pattern on which files are corrupted. I did take the sandisk card to the ritz camera to develop the picture that came up corrupted on my computer and print out a picture. The wierd thing is that picture comes out great on their screen before it prints out the image. The actual 4x6 image turned out great

. I may have to bring the laptop to shop them what I am talking about

Sounds like it could just as easily be your laptop/card reader at fault if it's fine on the shop computer. If the camera is happy taking pics and shows them on the chimp screen OK (?) but your problems occur when the laptop gets involved...
If you plug the card back into the camera do the corrupted files display OK or do they appear corrupted on the camera too?

This could perhaps even explain your friend's computer showing the same errors that time if you plugged the card into your computer first - maybe your computer corrupted the files on the card. Not sure how the shop computer could uncorrupt them though...
I take it that once a bunch of files are corrupted it's the same bunch that stay corrupted - i.e it's not *completely* random every time you download the same set of files?

Intermittent faults are a right pain.

I hope something becomes clearer soon!

Chris....

Both the cards display the images correctly on the camera but those images show up corrupted regardless whether I downloaded them via cable or card reader. One the Ritz sales rep said that connecting the camera directly may effect downloading the images due to power flunctations. And eversince then, I have been using the card reader and still having the random corrupted images. That's a good question about picking random pictures to be corrupted...I would like to say that the same images were getting corrupted because I noticed this when I had the camera directly to the computer. But I haven't been paying attention with the card reader

. This is so frustrating....I can deal with bad photos because of the user not knowing how to take good pictures but it shouldnt be because of the hardware

. I love the camera. It takes some excellent photos.

Just out of curiosity, when you format the cards or delete files, are you formating or deleting on the computer or in the camera? I have heard that formating or deleting files through a computer creates corupt files. I always take my card out of the camera, plug it in to a card reader, copy the files, then load the card back in the camera then format it.

Snegron....I will always format the cards directly from camera. I have been told by many that formatting from computer is very bad thing.

Have you spoken to anyone at Nikon anbout the problem? I have had numerous bad experiences with Ritz, mostly with sales people who know nothing about cameras other than what they were trained to say. Last year I purchased a D70 from Ritz and had to return it the next day because of the dreaded "green light of death" problem. The store manager told me it must have been user error because there had never been any problems reported with the D70!

. What another possibility is to take the card reader to a different PC and see if it could be that

If Ritz cant resolve my problem, I will call Nikon on Monday Morning to work with them.

I checked the problem out with nikon by mailing them some sample files with imaging problem...now they indicated that I may have to send them the camera for servicing...I have 2 questions:

1) Is nikon good with servicing?

2) what precautions should I take when I am sending to them, so I get the camera intacted and fixed from Nikon?

just bubble wrap the camera real good , and then put it into a small box, seal that box and then insert it into a larger box with the white peanut shipping material and it will be just fine

As a general rule of thumb (I've never had my camera shipped before), you get things insured for the amount that you purchased them at.

really doesn't matter just make sure it is air shipped, I generally find this to be easier on the gear than getting tossed into all the trucks at each leg of the journey

You mention going directly to CD. This is not a good idea you should load them to the hard drive first.

Larry....Sorry let me clarify...I usually download the images into a temporary directory on the HD and then burn it onto the CD

Not sure how it could happen unless you set the camera for a double exposure. My D2H has a rotating wheel on the top left that allows double exposure.
