p.1 #1 · another 80-400 train shot

Today's shooting was a little more interesting because we had gusty wind with a cold front coming through. I usually setup with my tripod, but I didn't think I had time. I turned VR on, and as the train got closer, naturally the wind picked up, and I didn't think I'd even get a crisp shot. Anyway, I like what I got.

All shot with the Nikon D2X, 80-400 Zoom-Nikkor, ISO 100, manual exposure.

I've never seen the '7777' locomotive before, I'm please with how crisp these images are.

The outside numbers have a little movement because it's so close, but still dead on focus. This is about the time your adrenaline flow is about to rupture your arteries

Nice shots!

I'm still not happy with the new CSX paint scheme. I like this one much better. But, I can understand the cost savings.

Is that a winged UP unit behind the lead unit? Looks like an SD maybe?

Thanks! I am tired of all CSX colors right now

I wish they could come up with something like the UP or BNSF, at least something that looked good. Yeah, that is a UP trailing, and it's an SD unit. Why in the world it couldn't have been the lead unit

I love to shoot the UP's

Thanks Guy. Now, if it was 'my' model train, I would change the colors, and the best looking locomotive would always be in the lead

Nice shots Jack. I always enjoy your train shots.
I guess I am kind of lucky. I work by the major east-west UP/ex-SP lines out of Los Ageles and live by the BNSF east-west lines out of LA. So, I am a little jaded by the big train sets. One of these days I will get some good UP or BNSF shots.
Unfortunately, my favorite railroad was swallowed up by UP. I was always a SP/Cotton Belt fan. Especially the old black widow paint scheme. I got some shots of a 1950 GP-9 in the black widow scheme when we took a train ride behind it as well as some nice shots forma RR graveyard. One of these days I will get the shots out there for you to oogle at.

I’m not much on trains, but your photo reminded me of a couple I did for the heck of it last summer (2004) wishing I had a steam locomotive to shoot.

#1 The Engineer was laying on the horn for this shot cause I was on the tracks, but could have changed lenses before he got to me. You can’t really read out the cut out numbers on the top of the bridge in this edit, but they tell the year the bridge was built. 1908.

I found several other shots of CSX 7777 on-line (just do a Google search on "CSX 7777"), but yours, Jack, are much nicer than the railfans have taken with their digicams. I vote with the crowd in choosing photo no.2 as the best. Print it, frame it and sell it.

Thanks Mike! Man, all the big roads have swallowed up so many. Sounds like you're in a good area for shooting. I finally got a shot of a GP-30 the other day, one of the last few in service on the CSX line. I have very few GP-7 or 9's though. Dig out those old shots

Thanks for posting this Gary. I like this shot, with all the converging lines and the bridge. Man, there's no steam down this way, ever. I guess there's no where to make an excursion run, hehe.

Hehe. I still think the SF Warbonnet scheme has to be one of the best looking. Even with the BNSF replacing the Santa Fe lettering.

Here's 776 I caught quite a while back. If I'm not mistaken, I took this one with my old favorite, the Coolpix 990.
