I went to the show today at the Javitz Center in NYC with my dad to check out the world of photography, specifically the Nikon stuff. While I didn't expect a D200 nor do I really care for it, cause I am more than happy with my D1x, I was curious about where Nikon future was going and for future lens releases (85 1.4 af-s!?!??!?). Anyways first off I am a die hard nikon user. I will defend them to the grave, but whenever I deal with Nikon itself, at these convention type things... WPPI also, I always leave their booths with a soar taste in my mouth because of their arrogant, snotty attitudes. On the other hand though, I was checking out Dennis Reggie speak at the Canon section, and their representatives were more than friendly and were going out of their way to tell you about their product without putting down the other guy.. nikon. Honestly I love Nikon, but as a company they have the MOST arrogant attitude, which is why so many people are jumping ship. It's mostly because of the attitude and the arrogance that they carry more than the D200 not being released. Also it's kind of a smack in the face when on their billboards that advertise their booths they have pictures of the F6 and the D50!?!?!? The D50??! are you kidding me, what about thd D2X? Is the D50 really the flagship of Nikon? It really bothered me and I expressed it to one of the nikon reps who actually agreed with me to the fullest, but had no response. I know I'm gonna catch crap for bringin this issue up because I hate the dissing of brands, I believe in just shooting, but it really got to me today how arrogant Nikon is. I'm only 20 years old and I have invested a lot in Nikon and I am gotten my return, but at the same time I feel like in almost every aspect Nikon disprespects the people that have invested in their gear.

It's your age maybe? That seems to matter to some salesmen. But companies do have personalities, and so do user communities. I'd bet the F6 and D50 ad is really meant to be only a D50 advertisement and the F6 is there to share it's halo with the lesser model.

I would agree with the age category. I remember when I was that age and would try to purchase something expensive that I had saved up for. Ghosts all around, I couldn't even get somone to pull what I wanted off the shelf.

Aegean the only thing I can say is hold on, it changes later. At 20 purchasing nice euquipment just plane stinks. Wait ten years then you'll get some attention.

As far as the D50 thing goes it's all marketing. They plan to sell more of those than the D2X so they'll put that up front. The kind of shooters that need or want the D2X already know about it and don't really need any more pushing towards it.

Seriously the crappy co-operate attitude from Nikon really pisses me off. I don't feel that they respect me or their customers at all. That had been one of the biggest reason why I hold on some of my big $$$ purchases until recently.

Look at the D2X WB encryption, their slow product cycle... etc. If I had my ways I would've gone Canon. In fact I might still sell all my Nikon stuff and switch in the future.

But, honestly if you look at Canon, they ain't all that much better. Espeically with their entry, mid-level products. 300/350D/20D got all kinda of problems, like focusing and err99...etc. They didn't recall or even admit that the 20D battery grip got problems til recently.

What about actually taking the pictures? Well, after I had played with the 1D series. I do prefer the Nikon ergonomics. I prefer the 11 point AF, because the focus points are more spread out and better for portraits. For some stupid reasons the Canon flash metering sometimes really just misses it. Some complain that even with non-flash metering it misses sometimes, but I havn't experienced that myself. So, sadly Canon ain't no perfect, not for me at least...

The real problem is that we lack serious competition in the market. We need more serious competitiors. I hope 4/3 and Sony + KM can change that in the future. We will only benefit from more competitions [if it's a fair market].

p.s. As for the just shooting philosophy, how many can honestly say that they dont' care about what they get for their hard earn dollar? If you don't care about the technical capabilities of the camera, just go get the Leica and it will last you life time... Seriuosly...

A booth at a trade show does not a company make. I could tell you the same story and just reverse the company/attitudes. Different day, different city.

Nikon hasn't changed their product cycle in 50 years, and they continue to release cameras when they're ready. You're expecting something different? If you just have to have faster product cycles, Canon should satisfy you immensely. You should be able to upgrade every six months.

KM and Olympus have released new cameras, just as capable as their competitors. I don't know what 'serious' competition is apparently, but the newest from Pentax and the aforementioned seem competitive enough.

From most of what I've seen on this board, I seriously doubt that a new camera is going to fix the problem.

Think the D50 is not 'competitive'? Look at the latest ad campaign featuring images taken with the D50. I refer you back to the previous paragragh.

Regards,

Jack

You should write some of your thoughts down on paper... so you can have a good laugh when you get older...

You're making blanket statements with little life experience to go with it.

You think Nikon users are jumping ship for Canon - because of Nikon's arrogance?

As Jack said, the same thing could have happened to you at a Canon booth on a different day. It's not the corporate policy of either manufacturer to be arrogant.

Oh... and Denis Reggie is a friendly guy - who makes a great deal of money getting photogs to hand over tidy sums of money for his instructional materials and seminars. That wouldn't work too well if he acted snotty.

First of all, I never said that the D50 isn't competitive, so I dont' think that the above comment is addressed to me. What I said that the market is not competitive enough. Big difference!

As it is today, Canon and Nikon owns majority of the market share. DSLR Camera systems ain't like your typical cars. If you don't like your Toyota, you can simply trade it in for a Honda or whatever. With camera systems, many people have incentive to stay with their current system to minimize the cost of upgrade. So, Canon and Nikon combined has a lot of power in this oligopolistic market, in fact pretty darn close to a duopoly. They can get away with lots of things, look at the D2X WB-encryption for instance. I don't like it, but it's either D2X or D200 for my next camera. Hack what ya gonna do if Canon starts to do the same thing? Ultimately the consumer suffers as a result of that.

I was at the show also and I had a completely different experience in the Nikon booth. There were some technical issues and questions that I had and the Nikon rep spent about 20 minutes with me demonstrating how to get past them. He couldn't have been friendlier and more helpful.

I also saw another rep be extremely patient with someone who didn't speak much English. And several times, I saw the reps purposely pushing the cheaper (D50) camera to those they thought were inexperienced with digital photography. And I saw a rep talk a potential purchaser out of buying a D50 because he already had a D70 (he wasn't looking for a 2nd body).

Towards the end of the day, I went back to the Nikon booth because I wanted to get a demo of the 12-24mm lens and the rep found the lens, snapped it on a body and let me play.

I've had to work trade shows and it's not an easy task. It kills your back and you give so many demos that you forget what you've said or not yet said to the people you're speaking with. Today was the last day of the show and I'm sure everyone was very tired.

Having said all that, I'll have to admit that it was a little disappointing not seeing anything very new in the Nikon booth. Obviously the D50 wasn't at last year's show, but it's been out for a while, so as far as I was concerned, there wasn't much to see in the Nikon booth. Even if the D200 wasn't ready for announcement (which tells me that it's going to be a long time before we see it), it would have been nice if they had managed to come up with a new lens or something.
They weren't even giving out any copies of the Nikon magazine (maybe they ran out.) While there were many Nikon reps in the booth, it just seemed to me that Apple, for example, thought this show was a lot more important than Nikon did.

I just shot a wedding today using my D1x, d70, and my baby the f100. I fell back completely in love with Nikon. Looking back at my original post I probably did over react. Probably a bad rep. Dennis Reggie is a coo guy, but he's no Buissink. Keep Shooting everyone!!

You were at the show on the last day. Everyone is tired and cranky on the last day of a show.

Also, the D50 is Nikon's newest DSLR. So why wouldn't they promote it. The D2X is almost a year old, so their marketing is geared to pushing their new products.

even though the D2X was announced in September of 2004, they were not available to the public until February 28 of this year. OMG, my X is almost 8 months old

sorry, couldn't help it

Glad to see that your business admin class went well.

Mass marketing of the D50 is exactly what I would expect. Consider the age of the camera and the target audience.

Sorry you had a bad experience at the Nikon booth. I've found Nikon to typicaly be less "salesy" than Canon at conventions, but never arrogant or snotty. Maybe it's just a NY thing?
