Well, it's official. Canon is recalling its EF 24-105mm f/4 L IS for a bizzare flaring problem. Parts are supposed to be available by Nov. 15. A ton of these have been sold, and one would expect a flood of returns to the Canon service centers.

So .... 24-105 owners only, what are you going to do with your lens?

Please, real owners only.

Here are a few reasons coming to my mind, as an owner of one:

[1] The backlog of repairs could take forever.
[2] The "repair" may not be effective. I can't trust Canon to get it right the first time; my faith dwindles for their second attempt.
I can't trust the lens for my use (pro wedding photog). Refund now, let Canon resolve all the issues, allow the dust to settle (but not on my sensor!). If and when the problem is resolved to my comfort level, buy the lens again.

That's sound reasoning by my way of thinking. We all have to come to our own conclusions.

A "great lens" cannot have this bizzare problem. It does indeed take some great images. I have a whole slew of them. But a "great lens" can be trusted. I came close to disaster with my 24-105. I still grimace when I look at the image I posted to in the related thread.

Here's a shot from this morning. Nice, huh?

As long as they can definitely fix it, I will get it repaired, since otherwise it's a great lens. This has only happened a couple of times, and I will happily keep using it until they have the fix ready. If I were shooting weddings, etc., I would not take the chance.

Unbelievable that they never noticed this in testing the lens.

I see 3 as a valid reason. The other 2 are streching it. I am guessing that there haven't been enough lenses sold to create a 3 month backlog glut. But, a refund is certainly an option some might prefer I suppose. Back to the 24-70 for you guys...

Holy crap! Could you post the aperture setting and focal length for curiosity's sake?

My faith in Canon QA and QC has been waning for some time, and I started with them in the '70s. This is truly unbelievable, and very sad.

Whatever Canon may say about this fiasco, the only honest explanation is that they did a tiny fraction of the pre-release testing they should have... period.

One more reason to never buy "version 1.0" of anything within 90 days of its release. --c

Nah...I'm an instant gratification kind of guy. I'll send mine back for repairs. I love the lens. I just hope that I can get it back in time for my trip to Egypt at the end of January.

Funny I hear "repair".....I would think that is a design flaw, maybe a re-postioning of one of the elements.....or maybe a complete re-design. Don't think it gonna be senting it in for a loose screw or something .
What do you guys think?

I like the lens a lot. It's exactly what I've been wanting. I would get it repaired although there isn't a big rush. I've taken 500+ pictures and have never seen the flare until I read about the problem and tried to duplicate it. Then it was easy to find.

Some ingenious photographer is going to win a Pulitzer prize for a picture that exploits this "defect" to make an awesomely dramatic photo of a scene with rainbow colored light rays. All you people who got your lenses repaired will be kicking yourselves.
