p.6 #1 · Modded 5D and Leica Lenses

OK, on that other forum I have just read about someone who says that a 2 metres long print from the 5D has mind blowing quality.
To me, this replies my own previous post and contents me. I rest my case.
After all, I have saved just more than half the money.
Now, if only the new 24-105 did not have that darn flare problem I know what I would buy with the change...

It is nice to see people as giddy with the 5D as I am... It is a kickass camera for the money!

As far as the 24-105L, I would by one with the "flare" problem in a heart beat if I could find one!

Spartan,
I see your point and partly share it, but somehow I am now glad I couldn't find one any sooner, I will wait that the flaw gets rectified (and that the shop gets some in ).
It was, though, a rather good-looking effect that one...

Andy,

that is why I want one! for the effect.... it seems to be only at 24mm wo and at the correct angle to the light. Nothing that can not be worked around.... but still there when you would want it.

Maybe one could obtain a similar effect with some kind of smearing over a filter? ...just a thought, worth trying, though...

Charles, thanks for posting this. The test image shown is fundamentally flawed because it downsizes the P25 image quite substantially to match the cropping of the 5D image. To a lesser extent with the 1Ds2 too. It seems a few people here were too hasty and totally overlooked this??

If people believe that a 5D will match a P25 back then they are kidding themselves

As for comparing colour performance, that is thrown out with the sRGB jpegs posted here anyway.

Match... what is "match" supposed to mean?
Do you think that a P25 can match the low noise of the 5D at (say) 800 ISO, for example? (Does the P25 have an 800 ISO setting at all?)
Or, why did the guy then posted them? He owns all of the above and if he really loved his P25 so much he wouldn't have deared comparing it. I wouldn't anyway!
Has anyone checked this image? (please check link)

BTW, I bet she has now started shaving her mouth, poor girl...!
And this image is actually from page 2 of the same thread so I invite interested parties to read it all if not done yet.
Of course, I do believe that a P25 can fetch more detail than a 5D, but then again, so does the 1DsMk2.
I think that it is not only about detail, here. I believe that people are starting to see other important parameters in photos. In other words (as it was said in a recent advert, if I am not wrong...) it is not just about how many pixels, it's about their quality!
I would choose the 12.8 MP of the 5D everyday instead of the 16.7 of the 1DsMk2 and not just because of the price difference.
Just my 2 cents.

Mmhh... just checked P1 site and not sure about the iso 800, some of them do have it.
For the sake of self-consistency though, I do need to add that I DO know that in controlled situations (read: studio) Phase one's backs are the best in digital (for the moment).
There, I said it. Or I wouldn't have been able to sleep with myself tonight.
Still, thank goodness for the 5D...

I quoted:
"BTW, I bet she has now started shaving her mouth, poor girl...! "
I want to disclaim: that was a bad joke, aimed at the good detail of the image only.
Of course the girl is a stunner.

In the H1, 1DSmk2, 5D test, the 1DS & 5D images were ressed up to match the H1 image.

Dear Graham

You are right about the comparison - other than 100%, somewhat confusing. There are many who have tested P25 vs 1DsII that clearly shows P25 value edge at 100ISO. At 200 ok, 400, noisy (There was site with farm and silo that was set up correctly.Maybe on LL)

Now 800 ISO on P25 uses 'binning' of 4 sites so you reduce noise but also resolution. Not too useful if you need resolution, but good up to 8x10

Now, I have seen P25 lose effective resolution relative to DMR at higher ISO since the bayer matrix processing resolution requires consistency of 'signal' across quite a range (maybe 16-32 pixels. So when the processing is used any noise can blur detail.

In above example It seems even with all reservations P25/H1 still looks more detailed (look at label)

But for those with Canon who need speed, why worry about this test? Similarly for P25 owners. Great at 50 and 100. Use where the tool work best, no?.

Victor
