p.1 #1 · D1X, stuck pixels, and Speedlights

Wondering if any D1X owners out there can help me out. I'm using a D70s right now but basically on the tip toe'd verge of switching over to the D1X (metering on my old glass, yay!). As far as flashes/speedlights go, D-TTL isn't a concern to me since I use them manually. I'm just curious as to whether or not there is a way to wirelessly trigger the SB-800 or 600 still, since I can do that with relative ease on the D70s.

Another concern I have is with stuck pixel noise. I've seen examples of shots from 200 to 800ISO and "general" noise is acceptable to me, however I'm a little concerned about what looks like an enormous level of stuck pixel noise when shooting at say.. ISO 200 at exposures at 10 seconds and beyond. Is this a problem for most of you?

No way I know of to trigger the flash wirelessly from a D1x. The D70 can only do this because it uses the on board flash to trigger the other flashes. You could put a very small flash on the hot shoe and have it trigger an SB-800/600 in manual mode. I just bought an SC-29 cord.

Yes, getting hot pixels is a problem on my D1x for exposures over a few seconds. For shots of a few seconds I zoom to 200% in PS and go manually clean up hot pixels. Takes about 2 minutes per shot, but I only do this on keepers that I plan to print large.

I haven't seen any stuck pixel issues in 2-4 second exposures but anything above 10 seconds and it looks like the shots are taken in the rain.

As long as I can trigger the SB-600/800 from roughly about 10 to 20 feet away I'm happy.

set the flash on the d1x to M and it will trigger the remote flash or get a remote trigger for the d1x. D1x doesnt like long exposures at all so 10 second exposures will never be your friend there...

you can use pocket wizards to trigger the flash remotely, but there is no TTL and it might not be worth it depending on the cost of the wizards

Presumably you mean an external flash, because my D1x doesn't have a flash, does yours?

Anyway, you are correct, an external flash mounted on the D1x can trigger my SB800 quite nicely, and it's doesn't take much output, you can dial it down far enough that the flash on the camera really doesn't effect the exposure of the shot at all.
