p.1 #1 · SB800 w/ D70 - wireless question

I have just returned home tonight with a new SB800 flash to compliment my 8 week old D70. While at the local camera store, I noticed (and bought) the NIkon Flash Photography Kit which includes a mini tripod and clamp equipped with a flash shoe mount.

My question is this: Can I activate the SB800 wirelessly from my D70 when the SB800 is the only Speedlight flash that I am using? I am hoping that I can trigger it wirelessly from the built in flash, or something like that.

Is this possible - can someone provide some quick direction?

Thanks

Yes you can with the D70 in commander mode. Adjust the onboard flash to the amount of light you want and in commander mode it will trigger the SB800.

Start with page 76 of your SB800 manual. Page 102 of your D70 manual will discuss controlling the onboard flash and page 187 will give you a rundown of the features available with the SB800.

Oh yeah and you might want to PM Tazo. He has done a lot of work with the SB800(s) and the D70.

Thanks - your specific information has pointed me in the right direction.

Of course, I'm still open to any suggestions and pointers on using the flash in this manner - mostly I'm interested in doing some self-portraiture to learn about the flash output and exposure systems...

The existing thread talks about issues with people blinking on the preflashes and shadow issues (see my note below), but this is what I did as far as the setup is concerned:

On the D70:
Go to the CSM menu and set Flash Mode to "Commander Mode" The click to the right and set to "TTL"

On the SB800:
Hold down SEL for 2 seconds.
Highlight the box that has the 2 curved arrows and hit SEL. Then scroll down and and select REMOTE.
Then hold down the SEL button again which will take you to the screen that has the Channel and Group selection. Choose Channel 3, Group A

My understanding is that the SB800 will not go into Standby in this mode, so the batteries might wear down quickly.

Don't forget to change all the settings back when you're done using it as a remote Flash.

I've only done some tests with this, but it really worked great. When I get a few bucks, I just might get another SB600 or SB800 so I can control two remote flashes or use the SB800 as the primary on the camera (actually on a bracket.)

For portraits, I would try setting the SB800 high and at an angle pointing down or possibly as a backlight.

Also, as per the other thread: if you're using very long lenses, you still might get a shadow from the flash on the camera.
