Well, the color will be good somewhere in that time frame. Just don't expect it in the higher elevations of northern VT and NH -- they peak around the 1st. The valleys should be quite nice then.
I live in maine and would love to meet up with everyone, although i feel somewhat intimidated by everyone elses photography knowledge and experience. I would just love to take some pictures with everyone, but most of all i would really like to learn.

I'm going to be moving around New England. After my Yellowstone/Tetons trip, I'll set up an itinerary and post it at the beginning of this thread. We can then see if the Vermont days are mutually acceptable. I hope I get to meet you, Samie.
I'm not sure exactly when I'll be up there, but I'd be interested in meeting up, so count me in for at least a few days. Probably over one or two weekends...

Mahesh, the northern part of Maine is still about a 6 hour drive from Boston. You should consider flying into Maine, renting a car one way, and then dropping it off in one of the other NE states.
I've also spoken with one other person who is definitely interested. Even if we can't meet up with you, we will still be heading up in that direction, so anyone else from NY/NJ, etc, just let me know.
The foliage in VT and NH is absolutely fantastic. It's also very nice in parts of NY, NJ, etc. Where the temperature changes fast, the colors will too, and a lot of that will depend on when the first frost is. The weather channel website has a good fall foliage area in the site, that is very accurate.

May I make a suggestion: Start in the northern part of Vermont first - Stowe or
Burlington - the color starts up there. - If you ever get out of Vermont I would suggest the Acadia Park at the tail end - the ocean tends to keep color from starting as early as Vermont.
I drove thru Vt last year about Oct. 20 and it was well past peak BUT there were still some great post peak color in warmer areas.

I've just got back from New Hampshire, 4 days of rain and thick cloud and one day of sun but I can see how it will offer tremendous photographic opportunities in the Fall.
My two cents to help your plannig. We stayed in Bartlett, about 20 minutes from North Conway n one direction, 30 minutes from Crawford Notch State or National Park (can't remember which) in another direction, 45 minutes from Mount Washington in anotehr direction and 30 minutes from the Kancamagus Highway ("Kanc") in another direction. The Kanc and Crawford Notch offered most potential.
I have a tourist booklet that you can have if you want it, just send me your mailing address and the link for your photos when you take them. The booklet takes yout hrough some of the White Mountain driving routes and is pretty good once you get beyond the "Don't forget to visit Bob's Chick'n Deli for our world famous wings" ads as it gives you asense of geography and really helps planning the days out (if the weather doesn't stymie you of course).
I have a daughter in Cambridge and home in Boston. I may be in Boston at the time,,,but not quite sure as yet. Don't expect to just walk up and book a hotel, most are booked full if I recall. They also charge the highest prices at this time. Also traffic is higher on weekends with all the leave peepers...Correct me if I'm wrong...

The Kancamagus is probably one of the prettiest areas in New England for fall foliage -- but on October 15th all you are going to see is a lot of tree branches and dead leaves. I won't belabor the point further, but if you guys want to see foliage in the higher elevations of northern NE you need to go earlier. If you want to go mid-October you should concentrate further south and lower down. --c

Portland Jet Port can be higher priced than some other northern NE airports.
There have been good deals into Manchaster, NH and Burlington, VT BUT it all depends on if the departure Aport has easy and good connections. Hunt the web for deals.
IMHO if you go early Oct. start north and work south - In VT - Burlington south down RT 7

Other areas to consider in the western part of the state are the Grafton Notch/Route 26, Rangeley Lake/Route 4, and a little farther afield back on the coast on the Canadian border, Cobscook Bay/Quoddy head
I have only been shooting for a year and have not had a chance to hook up with any other photographers yet.
I am from the Boston area and this sounds like a great trip and opportunity. I will be away during mid-October but I would like to offer some suggestions. First, the Columbus Day weekend is often considered to define peak foliage in the north country. Second, it is always difficult to predict where "peak" color will be found. Weekends can produce quite a bit of back-country traffic. Don't underestimate this traffic, particularly on the larger connecting roads and state highways. Motel reservations may be hard to comeby for those dates.
I would like to suggest this website for particular attention
There are very good back country drives listed. Some traverse, at least in part, some dirt roads and I have found these particularly rewarding, as they are relatively deserted, not to mention beautiful. It is very useful to have detailed maps. Your AAA ones won't do! Arcadia National Park should also be beautiful and because it is on the coast, peak foliage may be a little later.

A few people, including myself, have tried to point that out. I know Mahesh is going by the website he posted but 30+ years of living in NH has taght me better. Peak color, for the Kancamagus, is the first weekend in Oct (This year Oct 1+2). Drive an hour south (Concord) and color will be at peak 10/8 + 10/9.
This is not to say there won't be great color in NE on 10/15 + 10/16 it just won't be in the mountains.
I'm going to Acadia on 10/1 and 10/2 as it should be nearing peak that weekend.
Maybe an FM meet should be organized around peak color rather than Mahesh's travel plans?
