p.1 #1 · D2X NEF vs JPEG...is taht me or...

Hi all,

I have been enjoying my D2X for a few months now and really enjoy it.
Now since I still have not upgraded my computing equipment (I am still runnig on 1.7Ghz processor, and despite 1 Go of memory, it is very slooooow), up to now I have been almost exclusively shotting in jpeg mode.
This week I decided to give a patient try in NEF mode to see what I am potentially lossing..., after a coule of hundreds shots and a lot of patience I came up to the following conclusions by comparing both formats (not on print, only on screen, so yes this is probably not the best way to evaluate either, using 17-55 and day light):
- resolution wise, difficult to really see the difference on the screen in between the two formats,
- colour wise, the NEF file comes out with much better color rendition than the jpeg, richer and at the same time less saturated but more natural looking
- although I shoot very little at high ISO, I decided to give it a try. Before and after NetImage, I find the NEF pictures more prone to noise than the jpeg equivalent.

I have tried most of the D2X options to configure the beast, on top of the default settings.
I was wondering if any of you experienced a similar thing, or there is something definitively wrong with me.
Thanks for reading and comments.

Although this pertains to the D1Xs I use, I believe that what I'm going to say applies universally, to comparing JPEG and RAW images. I find that my RAW images are just cleaner, in every respect---but particularly with regard to artifacts. Ultimately, my RAW images yield cleaner JPEG images.

Some of the advantages of nef (to me) is the ability to recover problem shots, greater dynamic range with the ability to recover highlights and shadows that may be lost in a jpeg, and much, much cleaner files. Regarding noise at high ISO, see my post "D2X HI-2" which was a nef file at ISO 3200. Also, jpeg's are 8bit files, and nef's are 12 bit interpolated to 16bit, with much more data than a jpeg file can contain. My 2 cents

I fought off using Raw for a couple years but eventually came to the conclusion raw works markedly better for me.
I often tried to return to jpeg to cut the workflow and time to PP at the desk but the differences in image quality and the ability to improve the PP are simply too compelling.
I started out conversion and PP with PS CS and Elements 3 and really liked the results but more recently I found Raw Shooter Essentials to be a noticeable improvement and the key to my new found happiness.
IMO, it has the best compromises of image quality and speed of workflow.
I rarely have to go to PS for anything .

Is there a noticable difference in quality on the D2x between Raw and Raw Compressed to save on file size?

Thanks!

The compression is lossless, so no quality difference.
