p.1 #1 · Sigma 10-20mm HSM - I finally put my hands on it!!!

For two hours now I am a happy owner of this beauty. I had two lenses to chose from and i had a chance to make test shots before buy and see them on my PC.
As for me (examining 100% crop on PS) lens is sharp through the whole range, best at f/8 but still wery well usable wide open!!!
Looks like CA is low and wery well controlled too.
Mechanically feels very good with nice tight and smooth rings.
I'll try to show some pics later.
I think it was worth waiting!!!
I'm very satisfied.

Thanks Petrus,

The more information the better on this lens.

Sample Photos would definitely be appreciated.

Mark, I know there is sth. written about it but if you can explain it fast: how can I post some pics, here. On my other, Polish forum I do it by Imageshack.

It's easy. If you have something like imageshack, just point to the link.

If you know the full path, including the .jpg at the end, include that and you get the photo.

Sorry this weekend is very busy. I made tests vs. 24-120 VR yesterday till 2:00 am. Sigma is a clear winner (barely comparing S 20mm vs. N 24mm)!!! Some pictures on Monday...

Petrus, shot looks good. Is this lens tapered at the mount? Or is it wide from front to back? It looked like a fat lens.

Thanks

One by time, I think this works best. Now some wide power!!!

10mm, f/4, 1/15s, handheld, good to compare with 20mm... I thought my 24 is wide...

20mm, f/5.6, 1/6s, handheld... don't take it as sharpnes reference.

I'm not sure if I understand word tapered correctly, but lens body is equally wide except that the filter thread is slightly wider. Lens is nice and compact, not more fat than my 24-120 VR and much shorter. Zooming from 10 to 20mm extends the lens ~4mm. Both zoom & focusing rings move VERY smooth.

No need for more pics. - OK. I can see now that upper right corner is always less sharp, but as I said camera could be not parallel. I wonder what you think.

I'm impressed.

I want to buy a wide, the canon 10-22 is too expensive, so I'm thinking either the tamron 11-18 or the sigma 10-20, this is the first time i've really seen much about the 10-20, thanks!

You've made up my mind. I was deciding between this lens and the Tokina 12-24mm f/4 and the optical quality is just as good if not better. Thanks for all the tests.

Some cons now: not much - the lens cower is much worse than original Nikon design - you'll have big problems to attach and dettach it whet the tulip lens hood is on.
Another thing is that one of the lenses I tried had some problems with electric contacts and apreture info. From dealer's attitude I saw that it can be a "sometimes happens" issue so watch this out when buying.

All cons for now...

Is it me or do the peoples heads on the left and right look horribly distorted (widened)? I'm talking about the 10mm shot. Maybe best used on landscapes.

It's definitely not for making realistic portraits of people putting their nasty distorted heads near the edge of a picture while you're using 10mm....
... yes they are distorted, but this is 10mm !!!! Extreme wide almost around your head!!!

Now that I look at all the pictures I see this test is not mistake free from my side. All shoots were made on tripod, but with apreture settings at f/11 there were sometimes 1/15 shutter speeds. Also take under consideration that focusing distances were close to shortest focal length ranging from ~1 to 3.5 ft.
Strange to see now that one of the best 100% crops is "mid left"

I'm happy to see that by this time almost 1000 people watched this thread - I feel my time was not waisted... But I'd also appreciate some comments from your side...
