p.1 #1 · Next telephoto to come??

Hi all,

Now that I am bought to the VR technology, I am eagerly awaiting Nikon to eventually release the VR version of the 300 4.0, or better for me a 400 5.6.
The current 300 2.8 is too bulky for me for the reach, the 200-400 looks really nice but really huge too for a frequent traveller, so a lighter version in the 300-400 range with VR would be a very welcome one as far as I am concerned.
Now, to dream a bit further (but again we may end up once more in the 3kg+ range), what about a 400 4.0 or 300-600 5.6 VR?
Hope Nikon is listening :-)
What is the next Telephoto lens you be be looking at?

the best think they could do would be a re-vamp of the 80-400 with an afs motor. They would not be able to produce the number that we would buy

other than that a 400 f4 afs vr would be a sweet ticket as well

Simple, 100-500 f5.6 forget the VR (I use a monopod).

The big guns - 400mm f2.8, 500mm f4, and 600mm f4 are long overdue for VR updates. I think we'll see one (or all) of these before we see any of the lenses on the list above.

A 18-600 f/2.8, that weighs three pounds.

Nikon doesn't release new lenses so we might as well dream, right?

I see something like the 600 f/4 VR being a real possibility.

The next lens *I* want is the 300 2.8 AF-S VR

Cliff,

I do not quite agree with you...since the 200 2.0VR and 200-400VR 4.0 have been released before the 400, 500, and 600 were upgraded.
I think we may well see more zooms coming in (I wish??) in the long range, since the 200-400 seems to be a real winner and Nikon seem to sell loads of them (relatively speaking).

I believe we will see 500/4 VR coming out some time in the future. With the 1,5 crop it will make what used to be the 600/4 market and is easier to carry around. After all I have heard that this particular lens, 500/4 L IS USM, was the main reason to changing to Canon for some Nikon shooters.

I know this goes against the grain of this post, but what I would like would be a fast professional wide DX prime like a 12mm or a 10mm. I don't care how heavy it is or big it is but I want distortion and CA issues minimized and the beautiful Nikon Color and sharpness.

Before the 1.5 crop factor of digital, I used to hope for a 400 f5.6 for hand-held birds in flight, but I now use the 300 f4 AFS for that, with a 1.4tc if needed. I agree with Cliff. I think the three big lenses will come out with VR. I've been waiting for a 500 f4 AFS-VR for a long time!

Id definitely agree. 11-12mm f/2.8 DX would be superb.

But anyways, if Nikon revamped its telephoto line, they would have a killer system that would probably end up luring back the wildlife photographers.

I voted for a 400 f/5.6 VR, because that would be the only one in my price range, and I know a lot of the Canon shooters hate that their 400mm f/5.6 doesn't have IS.

What i'd like to see Nikon release (not that I could afford them, but it would be cool if they did):

-300mm f/2 VR
-VR for the supertele's
-300-600mm f/5.6 VR
-400mm f/5.6 VR
-600mm f/5.6 VR (Nikon's MF 600mm f/5.6 is an amazing lens, and in AF, would be GREAT for surf photogs)
