Dang, this is going to be a *terrible* basketball lens. Why couldn't it be a 50-135 f/2L IS? What were they thinking? ;-)

I'll be really tempted to trade my 24-70 for this lens. The 24-70 is probably my least used lens anyway, and when I do use it it's rarely wide open.

If the 17-40 is 1599 AUS and the 24-105 is 1999 AUS, then the price differential in USD should be around 20% as well...

Its gonna be a great news lens, and, its black.

Canon....30 1.4 please! (Canon would say, "buy a 5D and you can use your beloved 50 1.4 again")

the fact that the 24-105 has now been confirmed by Canon just makes the CPS snapshot look all the more believable

Strange that the CPS website is STILL down!

I wonder what that white dot is on the zoom ring...none of my zooms have that - that I can recall. I'm really glad it's not a f/2.8 lens, since I got a 24-70 earlier this year!

Hmmm... this one is tough. I have the tamron 2.8 which I enjoy, but the focusing speed kills me sometimes. I guess the IS would be good on the long end, but at like 50mm, that would be 1/10 or so on a crop camera. That's great, but whatever you are shooting better not be moving.

Assuming that the quality is L worthy, this will be Canon's biggest seller in years. It is about 50g lighter and only 8 mm longer than the 70-300 DO which means that with a 20D you will be able to fit the body, this lens and 10-22 in a waistpack making it just about the perfect vacation kit. One would have an equivalent range of 16mm to 168 mm which will cover about 99% of the non wildlife or sports need of the traveler without killing them with weight. (The new lens is 280g lighter than the 24-70L.)

If the 5D proves to be real and the edges hold up on a FF (the second part seems to be a very big if!) then the lens becomes a very nice one lens solution for a lot of travelers.

Either way, Canon, and us, have a winner on our hands.

Personally I am very excited about this lens. The price looks to be reasonable (especially with a Dell deal) and it will be the perfect walk around compliment to my 10-22. I have been waiting for an L with IS to replace my 28-105.. I never thought it might actually be affordable. I just hope the quality and sharpness will be there..

I just received a 28-135 IS that was softer than my 28-105mm (it's a great copy) so I sent it back. Really glad I did now..

2/3 the weight and 3/4 the price of the 24-70... I'm liking it more and more.

And hopefully with better optical quality than the 24-70, which isn't that great of a lens to begin with given its cost and bulk. --c

Wow...what else is there to say. How long do you think it will be until the initial US shipment is sold out? Man...

Can someone explain the anticipated price to me.

$2k Aussie = $1.5k US. Are we figuring on it being half that price in the US?

I've read the thread...maybe I missed something.

Steven,

On the same Aussie site, 17-40 L lists for Au$1,500, with $800 US listing for the 17-40L, you should figure out the list and street price. Although I think it initially will sell almost the list price.

Beside being lighter, it's also about .8 inches shorter the 24-70L, so that will help the balance too. I hope it does a better job on the wide end than the 24-70L, but with a 5x zoom range, that's probably asking too much.
