p.1 #1 · D50/D70 with SB-800

I have just recently purchased my SB800 and now I am complete lost lol. I can see the difference when I take pictures indoors w/the flash my pics look way better. I was wondering if anyone had a certain setting to set the camera up like M/A/S/P and also which setting should I start off with using the Menu options on the SB800 I own a D50.

I took a picture outside w/flash on close subject but came out little bit dark. IMO I might have the wrong settings I am new to the SB800

I shoot in Manual and Aperture Priority most of the time. When I use flash outdoors (fill), I set it to iTTL/Balanced Fill. The SB-800 does a great job.

The rule of thumb is for indoor shots set the flash to standard TTL (sans BL). This will set the camera to give correct flash exposure. TTL-BL provides a reduced flash output for fill-flash outdoors in bright sunlight. The idea with TTL-BL is the flash will lighten the deep shadows on the subject increasing detail in those areas. You are not trying to eliminate the shadows, just lighten them. TTL-BL is setting the flash so it's not to be the key light source but only a fill - hence the reduced output. TTL-BL is auto negative flash compensation where the camera decides how much reduced flash output is needed.

If you want control of your fill-flash, shoot in standard TTL mode and dial in your own amount of negative flash compensation. (Not exposure compensation.)This is the preferred method by some because you know where the starting point is and know how much reduced flash you are applying to the subject.

Just remember with flash photography you are dealing with two light sources on your subject. One is coming from the flash, the other from other sources. As already mentioned play around with it, take notes, film is cheap. Flash photography isn't the complicated once you know what's going on but getting there is a learning curve.

Have fun with it. Ask questions. You'll get it. The sun is starting to come up. I gotta go take pictures.

one tip that is fun to learn about is that the shutter speed now only controls the level of ambient light exposure and not the flash...

if you need to brighten up the areas of the photograph that are not lit by the flash, lower your shutter speed and see what happens, all the way down to 1/10 or even lower at night...

conversely, when shooting outdoors, if your subject is in shade and your background is bright, bring the shutter up to the max sync speed to try and balance the exposure a little more...

practice, and have fun... flash is really a whole 'nother world to explore.
